Madden and NCAA should Eliminate the *Overall* rating
Posted on April 5, 2013 at 08:25 PM.
My idea is for the dev teams for Madden and NCAA (and frankly all sports titles) to eliminate the overall rating.

Ideally each individual rating should have an effect on the performance of an athlete. I believe the overall rating is not needed, I believe it is used to often to determine who starts or not by users and how well players perform during simulated games.

By eliminating the overall it would force the user to look at each individuals rating in order to run certain types of sets/formations/styles on each side of the ball. i.e looking at a WR elusiveness in order to run screens etc., jumping ability to run an end-zone fade, a QB awareness over THP/ACC so the QB would be able to sense pressure (or the flip side the QB with better power/acc would complete a better percentage of passes).

Another example:

You have a corner who is extremley good at Man Coverage lets say a rating of 90 (best on your team). You are going up against a team with only one good WR lets say Larry Fitzgerald. You would want that guy in the game as much as possible (in Man to Man situations) to cover Fitz. The current set up that player may be your 3rd or 4th best corner because of overall. Eliminating the overall would add strategy to the game.

This would also force the user to do some scouting of their opponent before playing a game. At least looking at the different types of players the opposing team has and a depth chart to see who the team is currently trotting out onto the field. It would add the ability of the user to find and exploit miss matches and force the CPU to adjust.

This would also fit when you are playing the CPU, the CPU should be able to recognize a miss match on the field and attempt to exploit it and force the user to adjust their game plan.

I realize this would probably mean the game engines that NCAA and Madden are currently running would need to be pretty much rewritten. Which now, with the new generations of systems coming out, would be a great time to do it.

Happy Gaming Everyone!

Great idea. Maybe noteliminate it because of casual fans but not have it be the main factor. Heres my example from today actually. In my 2k13 bulls season i played against the magic left my normal matchups to start. Aaron afflalo lit up rip hamilton in the first so how do i counter i put my defensive stopped luol deng on him. Now the mismatch was hamilton vs turkoglu so i hbenched hsmikton for the morr athletic jimmy butler and pulled away by halftime. The amount of strategies when u find a great slider set is amazing because under normal gameplay i could of gotten away with hamikton on the floor due to scoring but fair sliders are about adjustments and matchups

What sliders do you use in 2k13? I need a decent set.

Vtcrbs trifecta set

It's not a great idea. Forcing every user to scan every rating is cumbersome. A lot of kids don't want that. Adding this as an OPTION for those that do would be a great idea.

I think letter grades may be a better idea but if you are fine with the game giving you fully complete numeric grades for each attribute then I don't see the problem with the overall numeric grade, especially since it changes based on scheme in CCM which I thought was a good idea.

I have no issue with the idea itself. It has some merit and the logic behind it is seemingly sound. That is until you start thinking about how poorly the CPU manages its rosters in franchise/CCM. I like the idea despite that glaring weakness, but as an option like suggested by rudyjuly2.

One of the worst ideas I've ever heard.

it wouldn't make a difference because the overall ratings tend to be subjective anyways. It is already properly balanced by player ratings, strengths vs weaknesses etc.

The only thing needed is better game play logic by the AI in all games.

The scouting is a feature that need to be expanded on more, by these developers, cause every game has that feature in some fashion. It just needs to be made more of a priority in a sim mode, as well as timeouts and practices.
