What does the Iglesias acquisition mean for Peralta and the Tigers?
Posted on July 31, 2013 at 12:38 AM.
With the announcement that the White Sox have entered a three-team trade with the Tigers and Red Sox for the services of Jake Peavy, the surprising news is the inclusion of the Tigers to the mix. Though, in all actuality, it shouldn't be that surprising. With the Biogenesis scandal still going on, the MLB has yet to finish handing out suspensions to those named.

One such name is Jhonny Peralta, the perenial All-Star shortstop for the Tigers. Peralta, who has put up great numbers on the year, could be facing at least a 50-game suspension, and Iglesias gives the Tigers someone to take over in a worst-case scenario. On the off chance Peralta isn't handed a suspension, Iglesias can be penciled in at second for the injured Infante, shoring up a weak spot in an otherwise vaunted Tigers lineup.

As even more incentive for the trade, Peralta is a free agent after this season, and it's looking like the Tigers may be ready to move on regardless of the outcome of the scandal. Iglesias isn't arbitration eligible until 2016, and not eligible for free agency until 2019, so the Tigers control the young shortstop, which is more than can be said about Peralta.

All in all, the is a good move for the Tigers. Sure, they had to give up a good young outfielder in Avisail Garcia, and potentially Brayan Villarreal, but Iglesias has the potential to be an All-Star in the near future, and projects to be a better fielder than Peralta. Only time will tell, but the immediate outlook is good.
