With the death of his friend on his mind the game of basketball just didn’t seem fun. He was out in Phoenix with a struggling roster trying to find its niche and the clear cut best player riding the bench and why? Well coach Hornacek still believed that Williams had a lot to work on and while that may have been true he was much better than anyone they had starting at the moment and they were 0-7. His +/- was (+9), and when he was in the game the offense looked crisp but they could not sustain a lead while he was on the bench. With the frustration of not playing well and not getting playing time Darnell meets with the owner in hopes to shed some light on the current situation. The owner claims that it’s the coach’s duties to put the best team on the floor and make game time decisions. At 1-9 Darnell reached out to Dom and asked could he do something to get him out of Phoenix. When Dom asked him do you have a particular team that is interested in you Darnell replied, well who is interested in me. We don’t know if this was by coincidence, but as Dom started to read the names off the list he had he said Charlotte. Immediately Darnell stopped him and said yes, c’mon see what you can do Dom. Dom didn’t promise anything but he went to work. The rumors got out and whether Phoenix liked it or not Williams was still on their roster, but any inclination of him starting now went out the window as he still rode the bench as the team is now 4-9. November 12th is the date and the Charlotte Hornets come to town to play the Phoenix Suns. You can see Williams, Walker, Batun & Jefferson all talking as old friends before the game as if they all said we should put the band back together. This is pure speculation on our part but that is what it looked like. The Hornets beat the Suns that night in a convincing manner and later that night Williams gets a text from Dom. “Remember when you said you wanted to be traded to the Hornets…DONE!” Williams is going back to Charlotte and getting the band back together. A strange 1 ½ years in the NBA for Williams as he leaves Charlotte to go to Phoenix only to come back to Charlotte in what may go down as the most interesting 13+ months of anyone’s NBA Career. Williams assures he is happy in Charlotte, Charlotte is glad to have him back and everything that once was is now water under the bridge and the rising star of the NBA is back at home and is looking to take this team to places they never been before.
