This date in history, Seattlefan1 style(Dec. 26, 1984)
Posted on December 26, 2013 at 07:55 PM.
Well, it's been quite a long time since I wrote anything on this blog or made updates to it(looks like since 2011 believe it or not).

Anyway, I've decided to at least make an attempt to update this blog and other blogs on other websites I have accounts at on a regular basis; whether the updates will be surrounding pop culture, sports, radio, TV, etc., i'll be writing about it.

The first new blog update(at least here), will be about nostalgia, a subject everyone has opinions on; however, it will be a different kind of nostalgia, which I will share in a moment.

I've noticed in the past that many people post old TV listings, or old radio playlists, and so on online, but not many people post what was going on during a specific day in history(well, some do, but not in the way I will be writing).

As for the nostalgia I will be posting about: I will be writing about various sports, TV shows, music and such that was out, going on, etc. on specific days in history(or at least the last 50 years or so).

That said, my first blog post in a series I call This Day In History, Seattlefan 1 style, will be concerned with the date of my birth: December 26, 1984.

Mainly this will consist of various sports scores, music listings, and so on from certain days, but with the pithy and wonderful(OK, maybe not wonderful, but at least passable) commentary of yours truly, that said, here's December 26, 1984, in my own personal style...

By the way, I would like to give credit where credit is due here; most of the places I've gathered this info from are online(google news archive, the archives of Cashbox magazine, and various sports history sites).

Starting things off, we take a look at what movies were out on this day(sources of all this info by the way, are the spokesman-review from Google News Archive, December 27, 1984 and the Gainesville Sun December 26, 1984 and December 27, 1984).

Among the films that were out on this date were Starman, featuring Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen, 2010: the year we make contact(guess that movie wasn't too futuristic, as we didn't make contact with aliens in 2010), Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy, a re-release of Walt Disney's animated classic Pinocchio, as well as Dune, and City Heat with Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds(good combo, too bad i've never heard of the movie until now).

Moving to the world of sports, these were the events going on in that realm on December 26, 1984:

In the NBA(back when Seattle still had a team and the league still mattered; merely my opinion of course): Washington drilled Indiana 114-89, New Jersey beat Detroit 112 to 97, Dallas took down the L.A. Clippers 124-118, Milwaukee stopped Houston 97-87, Atlanta tripped up the New York Knicks 117-105, Boston stopped Phoenix 119 to 114, Denver knocked off San Antonio 130 to 117, Utah nipped the then Kansas City Kings 123-122, and lastly(unfortunately) the L.A. Lakers tripped up the Seattle SuperSonics 101-97.

Your division leaders in the NBA at the time were Boston, Milwaukee, Denver and the Lakers; one interesting note in the Seattle-Lakers game, apparently Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recieved a technical foul(boy would I have liked to have been a spectator at that game, just to see what he did to get the technical in the first place

Moving onto the NHL, your scores were the Hartford Whalers 5 the New Jersey Devils 3, Detroit over the NY Rangers 5-2, Buffalo shutting out Toronto 6-0, Washington over Philadelphia 6-0(guess the Sabres/Maple Leafs contest and the Capitals/Flyers contests at a lot in common huh?), the Pittsburgh Penguins 6, the New York Islanders 5, Minnesota(the North Stars of course) 4, the Winnipeg Jets(the original team) 0, St. Louis 4, Chicago 3, Edmonton 6, Calgary 5, and finally the LA Kings tied the Vancouver Canucks 3 apiece(yep, a tie, way before the NHL instituted the shootout).

In College football bowl action, the inaugural Freedom Bowl was played a few miles from where Mickey Mouse and company like to hang out(Mickey and company like to hang out by the way in Disneyland, and the game was played in Anaheim Stadium, only a hop, skip and a jump from Disneyland); in that contest, Hayden Fry and the Iowa Hawkeyes pounded Texas from the SWC 55-17(guess Texas didn't have a good day...)

There were also a couple of college basketball contests that day, and in them Minnesota defeated Marquette 70 to 62, and Wisconsin-Green Bay beat Gonzaga 53-52 in double, yes double over time.

In the Major Indoor Soccer League, we had San Diego over Cleveland 9-7, Chicago over Las Vegas 6 to 4, and Kansas City over Minnesota 5 to 1; also, as it was a wednesday there were no NFL contests, however this was a few days before the Seattle Seahawks faced the Miami Dolphins in the AFC playoffs, a game in which Seattle lost in a reverse of the previous year's playoffs(in 1983, Seattle beat Miami but lost to the LA Raiders in the playoffs; while in 1984, Seattle beat the Raiders, but lost to Miami).

Musicwise, the number 1 song in the country was.... Madonna's Like A Virgin(yeah, pop music's changed a lot since then huh?); if you wanted to check out the small screen, some of your choices were NBC's Facts of Life, Highway to Heaven and St. Elsewhere, The Fall Guy as well as the movie Malibu on ABC, and Charles in Charge and the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High over on CBS.

And with that, this closes the first of what I hope to be many installments of This Day in History; i'll be back at a later date with more nuggets from history, until then so long for now
