Notes about the game
Posted on October 5, 2010 at 04:39 PM.
So I've played a few games and have a few thoughts, observations and tips:

- ADJUSTMENTS. Running the same plays over and over will not work. You have to mix it up. In fact, I have mixed up set plays with quick hitting plays (PnR, low post) to keep the defense from anticipating my next move. Defensively, the CPU will change up their style. Against the Clippers, B. Davis was quiet for 2 1/2 quarters before looking for his shot as I increased my lead. When Kamen got into foul trouble, their offense changed dramatically. Great stuff!
- JORDAN CHALLENGE IS HARD. Trying to hold Dominique to only 25 points is not easy. With that said, here is where reality broke a bit. To outscore him, I felt like I had to play "video game" basketball rather than a true sim. There were times I wanted to move the ball more, but needed Jordan to get the points to achieve the milestone. Scoring 63 and 69 in other challenges, six 3s in a half with the limited quarter length may also present this challenge of breaking the sim style. We'll see...
- Can these bigs miss more layups? I'm liking the post game, but can a brother get a few shots to fall? I'll take it to the lab...
- STYLES. No two teams (that I've played so far) play alike (see ADJUSTMENTS). You have to prepare for each team and adjust your play style to counter what they are trying to do.
- KEEP MOVING. On higher levels, you cannot face up your defender and stand there long without a quick swipe and fast break the other way. Put in some lab time and know your plays and players.
- STARS WILL BE STARS. It was frustrating to see the CPU almost score at will with the superstars...Now I know how the real players feel. 'Bron 'Bron, Kobe, Durantula, et al are going to get theirs. Get over it. But team ball will eventually prevail (again, see ADJUSTMENTS) if run correctly. If not, well, no one wins them all.
- SIMULATION is the way to go. Dunks are still to be had, but I love the balance sim offers! When I give up a 12-2 run, I don't feel the CPU is cheating. Streaks are a part of the game. Crowd participation when the home team is pouring it on or making a comeback is great. The quiet crowd when you are taking it to the home team is even more satisfying. Nice job 2k!

There's so much more to talk about, but I want to get of of the computer and get back to the game. Until later... Peace, fam!
