What Happened with Percy Harvin?
Posted on October 22, 2014 at 01:18 PM.
Does anyone know what exactly happened with the Percy Harvin experiment in Seattle? Per the numerous reports, he was a problem in the locker room and had some "anger management" issues. While that may have been the case, was this the true reason for letting him go?

Could he have been let go due to a lack of production? I know it's only a small sample size, but through 6 games with the Seahawks, Harvin's stats were 22 rec for a total of 150 yards. He only averaged 6 YPC(lowest of his career) this season through 5 games. The reports indicated that Harvin was unhappy with his role in the offense, and while I am not totally siding with him, I don't blame him. As the offensive coordinator, shouldn't you find a way to get your most explosive receiver involved in the passing game? I have not watched every game the Seahawks have played since acquiring Harvin, but it appears his role was limited to bubble screens, sweeps, and hand-offs out of the backfield.

I am no NFL aficionado by any stretch of the imagination, but it appears as if he was just limited to being a decoy/gimmick in the Hawks offensive attack.

From 2009-2012(with the Vikings), Harvin averaged 70 receptions per season. He was on pace with the Hawks this year to match that total, but the problem wasn't the receptions, but how he was getting them.
I don't know the actually number of bubble screens vs standard routes he ran in Minny(Vikings fans, feel free to chime in on this), but his stats indicate that he was used a little more effectively then, than with his brief stint with Seattle. One NFL.com report states that he wasn't used as more of a "traditional receiver" because of his limited route tree as an NFL WR. While that may be true, during his 4 yr run in Minny, he avg 825 yards per season - in Seattle, had he played all 16 games, he was on pace for 425 yards for the year.

That is a drop off of 400 yards from previous years with the VIkings. I cant see a drop off like that in production being attributed to his decline in skills or health. He has only played a full 16 games once in his career, but I believe that the scheme along with how he was utilized as a WR show why his production dipped so dramatically.

Being a cancer in the locker room can definitely cause issues and buy you a ticket out of town, but shouldn't the Seahawks at least be held somewhat accountable for the failed Percy Harvin experiment?

Well it's one thing to miss games due to injury (or in Percy's case Migraines) it's another to sit out because you aren't happy with the way you are being used. The fighting didn't bother me so much because I know that happens alot more in locker rooms than it's actually reported.

I am a Harvin fan but if he's upset with the way he was used in the offense the only way to change that is to show your worth on the field. He has but when you have an offense that has underrated talent all over the field then you pretty much have to seperate yourself from the pack.
