Study: Pro football players on average die 20 years before everyone else
Posted on November 20, 2008 at 01:39 AM.
This is pretty amazing and at the same time frightful stuff. The CBC program The Fifth Estatedid a program on this topic Wednesday night. Apparently most of this is due to concussions and the pounding that football players go through day in and day out especially those on the lines. The study is based on actuarial studies done by insurance companies and by studies from major universities.

Anyways here's the page to the video of the story. Let me know if the video doesn't play and i'll try to find a transcript or another video of it.

Great read - It is a shame that so many pro football players die so young. Seems as though they receive so little reward for so much effort. Now I know not all players have that issue, based on say position and talent level, but for example - those guys that are journey linemen, tackles, LB's etc. Seems like those guys are most prone to this - As much as America loves football, I would like to see the Union do something to ensure players are treated better after they play with extended care ins. etc.

My dad called me about this last night. I didn't watch the show but it's scary to see this stuff. It also makes me wonder why some of these guys don't retire at a decent age before they really get hurt. You can't fault a guy like Robert Smith for hanging it up early just to make sure he can enjoy life and his money as he gets older.

While it is sad, it doesn't surprise me at all. Those bodies go through a LOT, something has to give.
