Should videogame writers do reviews on sports videogames?
Posted on September 9, 2013 at 03:26 AM.
Should videogame media writers do the reviews and previews on sports videogames or should sports writers do the reviews and previews? It get's annoying seeing a review from a game writer who spent most of their life playing other genres of games and sports is a ****** affair they are trying to catch up on. Many of these reviewers talk more about the graphics than the actual gameplay or authenticity to sport.
I think videogame media writers should stay away from sports games they really don't have a interest in. Many of these writer embrace the arcadey elements of a sports game instead of the sim or realistic aspects that were actually captured within a game. A writer should have a sense of history of the sport beyond NBA Jam or Mike Tyson's PUNCHOUT.
I think it's unfair to fans who use reviews from game writers to purchase games especially if they have a growing interest in the sport. The fans get the game on blind faith and they are very displeased by what they have purchased.
The sports game demographic is more adult than ever and the fans expect the sport game they are getting is what is advertised and reviewed. One of my favorite writers(sports and sports gaming) out there is FranchisePlay(Brian Mazique), he is very knowledgeable of many sports and he's on point about what he writes and talks about. His focus isn't on one athlete or team. You are giving a overall feel of the actual sports gaming experience through a sports fan who games. The reviews FranchisePlay give are some of the best around. I don't even know if he plays anything other than sports to be honest.
