Open Letter To EA, 2KSports or whoever? Part 1

Posted on 24. Apr, 2011 by Brian Mazique

"This is part 1 of this plea to the sports video game makers of the world. This is a plea from someone who is not just a gamer and a sports fan, but also a gamer that understands the concepts of programming and business. I have too much to share to put it all in one article, this is part 1:

Customization: Created Players/Teams & Stadiums
Gamers have become extremely artistic since the inception of the Create A Player, Team and Stadium options. One of my biggest request to the major sports game developers is this, please stop restricting gamers with the very tool the industry has given.
The best tools for creation in games have been captures in different games, but never in the same title. Backbreaker’s Create A Logo is the best of any such option in gaming period. The Create A Player, from facial likeness standpoint, has been forever changed with EA’s GameFace. Though it is not perfect, it works for some games better than others, it should be the blueprint for Create A Player faces going forward. The Body type blueprint has been written by THQ’s Smackdown vs Raw. SVR allows for you to extend the length of your creations’ arms, legs, chest. Widening it, compacting, etc to capture all the differences that make each person a physical individual.

In essence, the tools should allow any gamer with the patience and mastery of the tool to create anyone in the world with reasonable accuracy.
The color options and designs for uniforms, ring attire, etc should be endless. It would be based on the gamer’s resourcefulness and understanding of the tools. There are tons of patterns, color schemes, etc with real life unis and ring attire, right? Sure there are, but a drag and dop option would allow the gamer the freedom to do this, ala Backbreaker’s Create A Uniform option. For the helmets, you can drag the logo anywhere on the helmet. The ability to do this on the uniform itself would be awesome.

Somebody please bring back the Create A Stadium, Arena or Venue option. Do you realize how cool this would be now, with the technology available? Recreating old ball parks, designing new ones. You could design completely over-the-top venues, like amusement park stadiums, trailer parks, whatever. This would give gamers like myself all kinds of things to work with to recreate scenes or to create fantasy ones. In baseball, this would be especially cool, since the dimensions of the park drastically impact the game. You may choose to create a park that has a wall the height of the green monster from foul pole to foul pole. Whatever your cup of tea, please create a system that can reasonably accomodate our creativity.
Lets not forget......."
