It was opening night in Sacramento as the Kings took on the Cleveland Cavaliers in what ended up being a back-and-forth affair until the closing seconds. Sam Cassell and Brent Barry proved to be too much for this young Kings squad, as they routinely came up with big baskets anytime the Kings threatened to take the league. Peja Stojakovic also posted a nice 14 points while shooting 40% from downtown.
The Cavaliers were able to bully the Kings when needed and ended up shooting a staggering 33 free throws, which led to loud boos from the fans in attendance. Lamar Odom helped the Kings rally in the 2nd half, but it wasn't enough.
Coming into this season, the Kings are expected to compete for #1 overall pick in next year's NBA Draft, however, Rick Adelman believes his young core will surprise a lot of spectators this season. Adelman believes young outcasts Chauncey Billups and Lamar Odom will thrive in an organization that is committed to them. Billups has bounced around the league since being drafted #3 overall by the Boston Celtics in 1997, the Kings are his 5th team in 5 season.
Lamar Odom came into the league with a unique skillset back in 1999 when he was drafted #4 overall by the Los Angeles, however, despite all the physical tools and solid play, Odom has floundered on Clippers team with no direction. Adelman believes both Billups & Odom have what it takes to lead Sacramento in this new era of professional basketball.
Despite dropping their first game, the Kings were competitive and most importantly this young team bought in and was playing tough on both ends of the floor. It'll be interesting to see where the Kings end up this season. Could they end up sneaking into the playoffs as #7, or #8 seed, or will they win the LeBron James sweepstakes? We'll just have to wait to find out.
