Games of the Week 8/31 - 9/6
Posted on September 7, 2013 at 11:39 AM.
I'm back from summer and ready to go! As the MLB season winds down, the games that are picked will be based upon playoff implications. Football is back, and those games, both college and NFL, will be picked without any restrictions at all. So let's get started with a brand new addition of Games of the Week:

5. August 31: Arizona Diamondbacks 4, San Francisco Giants 3
Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona

Wearing their uniforms from the past, the Diamondbacks were trying to stay in the hunt for the second wild card spot in the National League. They started the scoring in the 4th, getting 3 runs off of two RBI singles by Miguel Montero and Willie Bloomquist, as well as a sacrifice fly by Gerardo Parra. In the 7th, Gregor Blanco's solo home run started the comeback for the Giants, who got an RBI triple from Marco Scutaro and an RBI single from Buster Posey. All scoring would hold until the D'backs got two men on in the ninth for Eric Chavez. The single that followed gave the D'backs a 4-3 win and the most walk offs in baseball, passing the Red Sox with 12 this season.

4. September 5: Boston Red Sox 9, New York Yankees 8 (F/10)
Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York

It has been a truly magical season for the Red Sox, and an up and down season for the Yankees, but here we sit an September with both teams in position to get into the playoffs. The Yankees are fighting for the second wild card spot in the American League, while the Sox are starting to run away with the AL East division crown. Newcomer Jake Peavy gave the Sox a solid start, but the Yankees managed to comeback from a 7-2 deficit with a 6 run 7th to take an 8-7 lead. But as the Red Sox have proven all year, they are never out of a game. Down to their last strike in the 9th against future hall of fame closer Mariano Rivera, Stephen Drew delivered a single to right that scored Quintin Berry, tying the game up. In the 10th inning, it was Shane Victorino's turn. He lined a single to right that scored Jacoby Ellsbury from 2nd to give the Red Sox a 9-8 lead. Red Sox closer Koji Uehara, who has been lights out, sealed the comeback win for the Sox, just another in their long line of comebacks this season.

3. August 31: #8 Clemson Tigers 38, #5 Georgia Bulldogs 35
Frank Howard Field at Memorial Stadium, also known as Death Valley, Clemson, South Carolina

In a thrilling college football opener, these two teams with high expectations this season were neck and neck. They traded scores in the first quarter, quickly answering after the other scored including this stretch. With 9:29 to go in the first, Clemson QB Tajh Boyd took it in himself for a yard TD to make it 7-0. 12 seconds later, Georgia RB Todd Gurley broke away a 75 yard run to tie it at 7. Only 19 seconds after that, Boyd hooked up with Sammy Watkins for 77 yards and another touchdown to make it 14-7 Clemson. At the half, the teams went in tied at 21. The third is when the Tigers started to take an advantage. A Zac Brooks TD pass from Boyd made at 28-21, and after Gurley had another TD run, the Tigers got a field goal to make it 31-28. In the 4th, the the Tigers got one more score to make it 38-28, and a Georgia comeback fell just short, giving the Tigers a big win at home in the season opener.

2. September 4: St. Louis Cardinals 5, Cincinnati Reds 4 (F/16)
Great American Ballpark, Cincinnati, Ohio

These NL Central foes currently hold both NL wild card spots, but the Cardinals are trying to make a run to win the division. They took to the field Wednesday, and it was the Reds who got off to a quick start, scoring 2 in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead. After the Cardinals tied it in the 4th, Brandon Phillips gave the lead right back to Cincinnati with a solo home run in the 5th. A Carlos Beltran RBI single in the 6th would end the scoring in regulation. Matt Adams thought he had won the game for St. Louis after a solo home run in the 14th, but Zack Cozart tied with a single in the bottom of the inning. Adams got another shot though, and hit another one out in the 16th, which gave the Cardinals the game.

1. August 31: Eastern Washington Eagles 49, #25 Oregon State Beavers 46
Reser Stadium, Corvallis, Oregon

Eastern Washington became the fifth FCS team to beat an FBS opponent in Week 1, an only the third ever to beat a ranked FBS school. Eastern Washington QB Vernon Adams completed 23 out of 30 passes for 411 yards and 4 TD, while running the ball 16 times for 107 yards and two more TD to lead the way. After EWU lead 29-17 at the half, it was known that something special might be happening. Oregon State got themselves together in the 3rd, and scored two quick TD's in the second half to take a 32-29 lead. Adams led the Eagles down the field, eventually taking it in himself to put Eastern Washington back on top. We skip ahead to the 4th, when Terron Ward's 4 yard run gave the Beavers a 46-43 lead with 4:50 left. The next drive by the Eagles would be one that Adams would never forget. He led them down the field, and with 18 seconds left, took it in from two yards away for a score. After choosing to forgo a PAT that would have forced the Beavers to score a touchdown, the Eagles went for two and didn't get it, leaving the score at 49-46. The Beavers got down the field in a hurry, and as time expired, they had a 52 yard field goal attempt... that missed wide left, securing the big upset for Eastern Washington.

Join me again next weekend for the best of the first week of the NFL season as well as more college football and MLB action.
