Games of the Week 5/4 - 5/10
Posted on May 11, 2013 at 11:17 AM.

From two blown calls in baseball to overtime hockey games every night, there is a lot of things to talk about this week. I want to start by telling you how I determine these games. It's not just every overtime game. It's an overtime game or a close game that involved a comeback or was back and forth between the two teams and close all the way. I can't include every Stanley Cup Playoff game that went into OT this week, but I can choose the best out of those. Here is this week's list:

5. May 6: Boston Red Sox 6, Minnesota Twins 5 (F/11)
Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts

After a lackluster performance from Clay Buchholz, who had won his first 6 games, the Sox found themselves down 4-1 in the 5th. Stephen Drew led the way as the Sox chipped away at the lead, getting single runs in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and finally taking a 5-4 lead in the 8th when Dustin Pedroia homered to left. In the ninth, they gave it right back when Brian Dozier homered. In the 11th, Drew capped a 4 for 5 night with a walk off double, giving the Red Sox a much needed 6-5 lead after being swept in Texas against the Rangers.

4. May 8: Stanley Cup Playoffs, Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Game 4 (Bruins Lead 2-1): Boston Bruins 4, Toronto Maple Leafs 3 (F/OT)
Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Ontario

The Maple Leafs jumped out to a much needed 2-0 lead in the first in a pivotal game 4. After a power play goal 0:32 seconds into the 2nd by Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci took over. He added to more in the period before the Bruins surrendered a game tying goal. Tied 3-3 in the 3rd, no one could pull away, sending the game into overtime. In the extra session, Krejci scored just over 13 minutes in, giving him a hat trick, and giving the Bruins a 4-3 win and a 3-1 lead in the series.*

*The Bruins now lead the series 3-2 after losing game 5 at home.

3. May 10: Stanley Cup Playoffs, Western Conference Quarterfinals Game 6 (Ducks lead 3-2): Detroit Red Wings 4, Anaheim Ducks 3 (F/OT)
Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, Michigan

The Red Wings were trying to stave off elimination and continue their season, while the Ducks were hoping to clinch on the road. Let's pick this one up at the start of the third period tied 1-1. 6 minutes in, Henrik Zetterberg knocks in a power play goal to give the Red Wings a burst of confidence and a 2-1 lead. That confidence increased a couple of minutes later when Daniel Cleary scored to make it a 3-1 lead. But the Ducks weren't done. They fought back, scoring 2 goals in a span of 51 seconds to tie it at 3 and send the game into OT. The Red WIngs showed their fans how much they wanted to stay alive when Zetterberg scored again 1:04 into OT to force a game 7 in Anaheim.

2. May 10: Stanley Cup Playoffs, Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Game 5 (Series Tied 2-2): Washington Capitals 2, New York Rangers 1 (F/OT)
Verizon Center, Washington, DC

Great goaltending has been the stroy line of this series. The same was true in game 5 when goaltenders Henrik Lunqvist of New York and Braden Holtby of the Caps both had one minor setback (a goal) in regulation on their way to stopping everything the opposing team had to offer. Unfortunately, one team had to win. The Capitals came close many times in OT, but it seemed as though Lundqvist would not budge. The Capitals were resilient, however, and Mike Ribeiro knocked one in around the halfway point of the overtime period to give the Caps a 2-1 win and 3-2 lead in the series.

1. May 6: NBA Playoffs, Western Conference Semifinals Game 1: San Antonio Spurs 129, Golden State Warriors 127 (F/2OT)
AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas

Down 16 with 4 minutes left in the fourth, the Spurs looked as though they were done. Coach Gregg Popovich lit a spark in them, and they went on a 18-2 run to tie it up and send it into overtime. The first overtime was nothing to speak of, and ended in a tie. In the second overtime, the Warriors held a 127-126 lead with 3.3 seconds left when Kawhi Leonard inbounded it into Manu Ginobili at the wing. Ginobili put up a risky three, but it payed off when the shot went thorugh the net with 1.2 seconds to play. After Jarrett Jack missed a desperation heave, the Spurs took game 1* despite 44 points from the Warriors' Stephen Curry.

*The Spurs now lead the series 2-1.
