EA's use of ESPN (my opinion)
Posted on August 3, 2009 at 03:49 PM.
I know im not the first to mention this topic...but have you noticed that EA has owned the ESPN license for quite a while now? look at every cover since 2007 and you'll see the games title and on the bottom right it says "featuring ESPN"...now when you see this..especially if you are a NBA/NFL fanatic, you would expect top notch ESPN style stat overlays and ESPN quailty presentation (see NFL 2K5, MLB 2K4, NBA 2K5) but you dont see any of that. everything is bland and sometimes boring. the EA games are ok to an extent with satisfying gameplay but that's only a part of what makes a good game a great game. the presentation counts too, fellas. if you really care about the EA folks telling you about the ESPN radio on your 360 or PS3, you might as well just watch sports center on tv all the time. see..this is why people say that Madden is better than 2K. that is not true. as you all know EA has exclusive rights to football games, which took 2K out of the competition. imagine if we had ESPN NFL 2K6, 2K7, and so on..do you really think Madden would stand a chance against 2K if we had those titles released...i cant' even say so myself because no one really knows, how great 2k6 and on could have been. 2K5 has gotten SO much praise that EA knew themselves they had to do something to make sure people talk about and play THEIR game. but im not saying that EA may not have something better...but pay attention to every videogame writer who analyzes these things, and look @ how many times EA has been @ fault for catching up to 2K (and im talkin about presentation)...if EA is the better company they say they are then they would have used full advantage of the ESPN license. people are saying Madden is good. but more people will tell you that 2K5 is still better...think about it EA...

My 11 year old brother said this not too long ago after looking at the NCAA 10 cover...
"Wait....this has ESPN in it??? where???"

Case closed.

People say that EA copied 2K5's presentation for Madden but didn't 2K5 just copy what happens in a NFL presentation of a football game on Sundays, Mondays, yada?? Think about it. One thing that I am glad they didn't copy was the lame voiceovers of the players. Those were pretty pathetic, imo, and what sucked is that they showed back up in APF2K8 instead of being improved on, like most of what they did in APF.

Now, I would definitely like to see EA really take advantage of the license going forward. Definitely overlays and replays with the use of the telestrator would be great. Also get better voice talent and really go hard in creating better commentary technology. 2K MURDERED Madden in those departments but now it's time to get it right. I applaud all the work done from Madden 09 to, at least, the full length Madden 10 demo I played (only 3 played games, a simulated game then 1-2 quarters worth of play some more before my PS3 died) and now I wanna see things like what I mentioned that 2K5 had included for Madden 11....but I'll take a completely new and organic animation system more than any thing else.

licensing agreements = terrible quality products, competition breeds excellence

this goes out to the people who are trying hard to defend ea...and attack 2K...umm, 2K was ORIGINALLY ESPN Video Games..thus they had the contract and rights to make sports games exculsively with the ESPN license. this bringing out ESPN signature style presentation that we all know and love when we watch it on television. and shame on EA for admitting they are copyiing 2K and their presentation skills.....its EA's fault they took the ESPN rights and not did anything with it. not many people cared that EA had the ESPN thing with it(...or DID THEY lol) why? becuase we all know wat happened and are waiting on the contract to end so more football games can come out
