A's sign Castro, Cora and Kazmir
By Oakland Athletics Public Relations Department — 2/20/12
Oakland, Calif. — The Oakland A's have come to terms with catcher Ramon Castro, second baseman Alex Cora and pitcher Scott Kazmir to contracts.
All are expected to join the team in time for spring training.
Castro, a native of Puerto Rico, is a career .237 hitter with 67 home runs. He is a 13-year veteran of the Major Leagues, having played with Florida, New York Mets and the Chicago White Sox. In 2009, Castro caught Mark Buehrle's perfect game.
Cora has played 14 seasons in the Major Leagues, and is hitting .263 with 95 home runs and 486 RBI. He has played for Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2004), Cleveland Indians (2005), Boston Red Sox (2005-2008), New York Mets (2009-2010), Texas Rangers (2010) and Washington Nationals (2011). Cora was a member of the Red Sox, which won the 2007 World Series.
Kazmir is a former two-time All-Star selection (2006 and 2008) and was the 2007 AL Strikeout Champion. He has a career 4.41 ERA with a 66-61 record and 993 strikeouts. Kazmir has previously played for Tampa Bay Rays (2006-2009) and Los Angles Angles (2009-2011).
In other Oakland A's news, the organization released second baseman Michael Gilmartin, second baseman Ryan Pineda and pitcher Travis Barnward.

The 2012 Oakland A's
Things aren't all well in Oakland, however. The A's haven't won a World Series title since 1989, and haven't been to the Fall Classic since 1990. There was some success in the early part of the 2000s — four AL West titles (2000, 2002, 2003 and 2006) and a wild card appearance (2001) — but even those years were plagued by an inability to get over the hump.
Since those years, the A's haven't been close to the postseason.
By virtue of its status as a small-market franchise, the A's are at a disadvantage when it comes to luring top-tier talent to Oakland. The A's had a small advantage when the franchise went to use of advanced stats to field a team. Yet in the copycat world of professional sports, most teams now implement the same philosophy, meaning whatever competitive edge the A's had over teams with bigger budgets has essentially disappeared.
With its playoff drought entering its sixth season, Oakland finds itself struggling to stay relevant in the forefront of baseball fans.
The A's went 74-88 in 2011, but the 2012 seasons brings the potential for brighter days.
In March, the A's signed highly touted Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes to a four-year contract.
By signing Cespedes, the A's locked up their centerpiece of the future, and the journey back to relevance — and a World Series title — began.
