Customization is the only way to a perfect sports game.

You may have heard the old adage that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Well, after spending about a decade within the sports gaming community, I can safely say that so is realism in sports video games.

So I submit this idea to sports gaming developers to give their games the leg up on their competition: make them customizable. Give your customers the power to define their experience as they see fit.

Think about the concept of sliders, then apply that to every nook and cranny of the game. You'd have sliders from simulation results to player progression to the most intricate aspects of the on the field gameplay. And what about fully customizable controls?

I know giving customers more control is a scary proposition to developers because let's face it -- when customers are given the option to mod a game so thoroughly, they typically succeed in ways developers never thought they could.

So I suppose there is always that risk that users could create a game so good that there is no longer any need to buy another edition of the series.

And sure, that's a definite possibility for developers. It's a quandary really. You'll never see another truly great sports game again without it being more open and customizable again, and you might ruin your business model by doing just that.

However, there are things which you can save as aces in the hole. New features, new modes, updated rosters, better graphics, commentary, and animations.

Those are all things that customers would still pay money for. Ask Giants and Jets fans how hard it'd be to get into a game in the old Meadowlands stadium. Ask Heat fans if they want to play a game without Lebron and Bosh on their roster.

There is still year to year marketability here. 2K Sports has provided a great blueprint for sports gaming developers with the Jordan Challenge -- giving sports games themes to honor their sports' legacy is a great step towards giving customers something different each year.

And you could always do the usual upgrades to online modes and franchise/dynasty modes as well.

To quote Michael Scott, "It's a win-win-win."

I just recently got 2k10 for my pc and i realized, and have been telling all my friends, that because of mods and all the customizing that can be done a few months after release the game is sooooooo much better on pc. I usually get 2k for ps3 and 360 but i can add pc to that now as well

So if this is the key, Why in your opinion did Backbreaker fail so much?

Nice to dream about, but the level of customization you're talking about probably won't ever happen. The only way I see it maybe happening is if game developers start offering tons of priced upgrades. Maybe offer a killer online franchise management system that is available only via subscription. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I'd definitely pay $5 a month to be able to manage my franchise while I'm at work.

@Max -- Because the game itself isn't as customizable as I discussed and it got the key basic tenants of football wrong. The gameplay was initially atrocious -- worst playing football game perhaps in the last 20 years on a major console -- and just recently became merely adequate. It also wasn't an officially licensed game, which just added insult to injury on the game's quality.

Several years ago, the mods made FIFA a better game on PC. While it would be nice to have expanded face packs, improved kits, and gameplay mods, I don't think the big gaming companies aren't going to go open source anytime soon. The forums are the best way to bring about improvements in the games.

I can agree with ya Chris. I customize every single sports game I play. In Madden, I like Gameflow...but that coordinator voice is annoying. And 2K always needs some kinda slider adjustment every year I get it. Most years its because players just flat out miss too many outside shots, human AND CPU.

Like you said, its all about what the gamer wants to experience.

i completely agree dude. 2k10 was really pushing the line of perfection. every player customizable, every rating, every stat, even rookies. you could control the length of the season, etc. - it's a long list of options. of course, i'll still by 2k11 because their 'ace in the hole' - MJ. plus they've improved the gameplay in general. if madden took this approach, it'd be a hugely different game. 2k's stance seems to be 'make the best user experience possible' while at EA, it's more 'make the best experience we think is possible'. the difference seems slight, but really it's a huge deal for most gamers.

Ultimate customization (thats a different definition for everyone) is truly whats been missing in sports games on consoles even since theyve began. I dont buy that it takes away the marketability of future versions because sports games (especially football) are so dynamic that you can ALWAYS work on the basics of the game and improve them in ways that customization cant. Thats not talking about difficulty sliders which theres not a wide enough range to begin with (in madden 11) thats just talking about the nuts and bolts of the game, animations, AI logic, physics differntiating player ratings and how they matter, adding new player ratings etc. Everything outside this that can be customized should be, I d still buy a new game every year for 60 bucks if we had this customization and all they improved were the nuts and bolts.

100% agree. I have been thinking about this subject because the Madden developers have been talking quite a bit about making the casual and hardcore Madden fan happy. The only way to serve both in the same title is a lot of customization.

I love the 2k games because you can edit anything you want to. EA generally has too many limits in place.

great post, I agree 100%. This is why I preorder every version of OOTP regardless of what the new features are. I know that I will be able to customize the game my way.

totally agree....why isn't the gamer given the chance to customize the game to their liking? we are paying $60 for the game. i mean, just updated rosters every year and a few tweaks here and there isn't cutting it.

Absolutely. Stop building a game that is only playable the way you envisage. Sliders have added so much to gameplay but they need to be extended across the whole gaming experience.
Also give games more multiplayer options offline.
A point to EA. Why does the franchise modes in NBA 2K11 & MLB the Show 10 allow for any number of players to compete with different teams but in NHL 10 & most probably NHL 11 you can only control 1 team? Oh sorry NHL 10 does have probably the most dire multiplayer single season mode ever.

Preach on Chris! Preach on! One of my favorite games of all-time was the baseball all stars on the Nintendo entertainment system. The only reason I do not think companies would move to this option is that it would hurt year to year sales and they would have to change their entire business strategy in regards to how they release sports games. I for one would be extremely hesitant about buying a new sports game after spending well over a year customizing my game to my choosing......Unless, you could carry the customization over to the new title.

Agree man, if you can play the game how you want, it will make the user happy. I look for balance and competition, others look for realism, others for entertainment, if you enjoy it and can tweak it to how you want its great. Every user has a favorite game and its probably because out of the box, it was meeting their needs!
