EA Sports...Best Thing Going? Is It Even Close? Stuck
Posted on December 9, 2008 at 11:01 AM.
This blog is sure to spark some discussion, but it's something that needs to be said. Look at the metacritic averages of the two biggest sports gaming companies in 2008 (EA and 2K):

EA Sports
89 - NHL 09
88 - FIFA 09
85 - Madden 09
83 - Tiger Woods 09
82 - NCAA Football 09
80 - UEFA Euro 2008
76 - NBA Live 09
67 - NASCAR 09
65 - Head Coach 09

2K Sports
86 - NBA 2K9
79 - MLB Power Pros
76 - Top Spin 3
70 - NHL 2K9
68 - MLB 2K8
57 - Prizefighter

What is up with that? Is the Peter Moore effect fully on for EA? And what's up with 2K Sports? Thoughts on the raw stats I listed above?

*Note these averages may be slightly out of date, since I averaged these about a month ago...if anything some might need adjusted downward but probably not up.

Those are some very strong accusations you have there 7stringking...but yet I have serious doubts you can produce ANY evidence to prove yourself right. I'm sorry man, but saying that stuff is absolutely pathetic and more importantly fallacious to the nth degree. Basically, you have taken the cake for providing the dumbest possible comments into the discussion with zero evidence to back up your rather crazy claims.

Is there a chance some sites reviews could be influenced by gaming companies? Yes, I'd say that is most definitely the case. But is it the majority of professional websites? No.

**Somehow this submitted before I was done, let me continue, hehe**

Metacritic takes into account a couple dozen different reviews for each game at least, so even if you want to throw out the top 5 highest scores for each game, you are still going to end up with the exact same results as before. The simple fact is, EA is producing better games right now overall than any other sports gaming company. There is nothing else you could conclude at this point.

You can throw the metacritic scores out of the window and would still end up with the same conclusion. Lets say you had money for only one game a year and chose to spend it on your favorite sport.

Pro Football: Madden...EA
College Football: Ncaa...EA
Pro Basketball: 2K
College Basketball: EA
Baseball: Sony
Hockey: Nhl 09...EA
Soccer: Maybe a wash with fifa and winning eleven
Golf: EA
Nascar: EA
Tennis and Boxing: many options with arcade and realism and I can't pick

I still prefer links 04 to the new Tiger, but if I want a new game of golf I would go with Ea, because they are the best of the rest. And even in head to head with 2K, EA is 1-1 because while nba 2K is better, Nhl 09 is better than nhl 2k9.

While 2K used to make great games, in this past year the only decent sport game from them was nba 2k. Nhl and mlb 2k are just jokes. I hope that 2K steps their game up, because I like them more as a company just from my memories of them from last gen.

All in all, the only thing that this blog proves is that, as sport gamers, we are in a horrible position this gen because the quality of great games are just not there. Every other genre of game has improved considerably over last gen except for sport games.

I've been playing 2K football and basketball since the first games on the Dreamcast and today I'm doing the same. If they can get more games to achieve that type of quality then they can turn things around.
