Backbreaker Demo Review Stuck
Posted on May 21, 2010 at 05:40 PM.

I almost feel bad for having skepticism about Backbreaker...almost.

After a few games, I can honestly say I think Backbreaker will forever change how we look at sports games, even though the game itself is going to make me have one of the worst love/hate relationships I have had in quite some time.

From my time with the demo, Backbreaker can be summed up as one part Tecmo Bowl, one part Madden, and one part something else completely unique. The game is simple, yet it can be deep, yet it is simple....yet deep?

You see where this love/hate thing is going now don't you?

Backbreaker is going to wow a lot of people, the animations are good, the camera angle is nothing short of revolutionary -- even though some are finding it hard to adjust to -- and the controls are downright awesome. However, I'm left with this empty feeling of what could be if only there was fatigue, if only there were injuries, if only....

I'm not sure where Backbreaker is going to rank this year, it's going to be a long few days when I get the full retail version as I try to figure out exactly how to rate the game myself. In some ways, the game puts Madden to shame in a hurry -- in others, the game is so far behind it's peers that I have doubts it can catch them.

Regardless, Backbreaker is going to succeed in delivering a fresh and new look at the game of football, and despite the fact I don't know if the game will have tremendous lasting appeal, I can easily see where the game will change how we look at sports games forever -- the traditional far away broadcast style vantage points kind of seem lame and highly unrealistic in comparison now after playing Backbreaker with it's in your face presentation of the game of football.

Right now, Backbreaker should be at least a rental for every football gamer when it hits stores next Month -- if only to see what a real fresh and fun new take on the game of football on consoles looks like.

Great demo review while confusing most who have played the demo will follow what you are saying. I use to be a stick skill junkey when I was younger now I love coach mode. This game has revitalized my passion for rebuilding stick skills. Its so strange something about it captivates you I usually give demos a hour or two of my time then continue on. I found my self playing this demo for hours. My 10 year old daughter who is not a gamer fell in love with tacke ally. I feel your point on fatigue and injuries not being present. Hopefully the game sells well enough for future versions where the missing features may make there way in. What a year for football gaming NCAA 11 and Madden 11 are shaping up great backbreaker has totally caught most off guard. I will be spending a lot of money the next few months all three titles are pruchases for me.

I've said this right at the beginning, if there is a second BB it will be truly jaw dropping. Im just hoping the first game sells enough for there to be a second one.
With that said, the first game looks like it will be really fun as well.

Thanks for the demo review, sounds very promising.

Surprised you said the animations look good. Too me, the running animations were a little stiff, and the jukes were pretty pitiful. The broken tackles look great thanks to the physics engine, but after a tackle is made, it takes too long to transition from procedural animation to canned animation, leaving players on the field totally motionless for short periods of time.

There's a lot of little things wrong with it (playcalling screen, presnap player switching, quirky in game game camera)... I came away feeling that yes, Backbreaker is fresh and original, but its no where near ready for the big time.

I agree Sanner.....and that is why I cannot buy this game! If only it had the few missing features.....it would be an absolute keeper! I can at least enjoy the DEMO!

A Demo never really does a finished product justice. I'm wondering if many you other guys are making your opinions known from watching videos or actually playing the Demo?

I think some are having trouble learning how to play the game. I was struggling with handling the game at first as well. Once I caught on it was magical I can overlook the missing features of a first year title. People usually dont like what they are not good at it. Like sanner said this game will change sports video games as we know it. That statement itself speaks volumes about the vision of the development team. Sports games in the future will have features that will spur from this title. For those who have the skill level to handle this beast its going to be a awesome summer.

The Demo was awesome. I loved the Camera angles(especially for the defense)I also like being in control of just one player and not auto switching on defense. Plus the ability to angle the LB or DE, that alone makes you feel like you are in a real game. some of the offensive controls are a little qurky but i can live with that. This is the first time that I played a video game and felt like I was actually on the team playing. (again especially on defense) This will be a day 1 buy for me. I love football and this game captures the majority of football fundamentals quite well. The physics alone are in uncharted water with breathtaking player interactions. If you don't at least give this game a chance and you like football you will be missing out.

I agree about somethings being revolutionary. The player interactions are something I've never seen before. They look like real people fighting for the football.

That being said, I love the strategy of football the most. I'm not a gamer's gamer. I like the chess match. That isn't very present in BB and you pointed that out with more respectful words than I.

There's too many interceptions, fumbles, special teams follies. Unless they have something special in store for online I won't pick this guy up. It was fun for a couple of hours, but it actually motivated me to return to other football games even more. In those games I can exercise my strategies more clearly and get more reasonable results. I don't want games with 10 turnovers all the time. We're playing 2 minute quarters and I'm seeing 3+ regularly.

Is the backbreaker demo on XBL? Or do you have to get it somewhere else?

In all the games I have turnovers have been minimal I have only thrown 3 interceptions all together in all the games ive played if you try to throw into bad situtations you will be punished just like in real football. I play linebacker on d-fence mabye thats why I havent picked the computer off as much. There is an anoying roughing the kicker penalty that has happened at the worst times for me. I also had to adjust to switching recievers for the qb to turn and look for openings. The punt return and kickoff return took some getting use to as well. I can see how anyone can throw 3+ interceptions a game unless they have no l clue what they are doing. The game is far from perfect but who knows many of the issues may be fixed with patches which is the way of the gaming world these days.

I downloaded the demo this morning. The game does take some time to get used to. But after playing it all morning and part of the afternoon, I will say that I think BB has the potential to be great. For a first time title, BB's pass block and run block schemes kills Madden already. The camera for me gets confusing at times, and I'm hoping that BB2 will have a default camera ie, 2k, Madden. But other than that, this will be a day 1 purchase for me. Here's hoping that somehow VC and the BB crew can get together and make beautiful football together.

The more I play the demo, the more I can't wait for the final product. For a first generation game BB has allot of promise. I have said it before and will say it again BB has earned my $60.00 (Canadian) Not a perfect game but tons of promise. If there is a second release I suspect their will be dramatic improvements to players features, game play etc... Madden will be forced to pull up there socks in their future release. T

I'm a PS3 gamer but did manage to get to play the 360 demo. I was impressed with the interactions, the aggressive level in this game is exactly what football is all about! I've seen some very unique tackling sequences. Though I came away disappointed overall.

For one, I was never a fan of the gladiator like players since day 1. I thought this would be toned down but from the demo but it looks like that's how the players will look. WRs looks as big as the LBs on the field and that feels weird to differentiate them from one another. Secondly, the running is simply too stiff or there's no range of running strides. The juking is a bit off to me, but I won't really complain about that. When a ball carrier is hit or has contact however, it's downright natural. The action is so natural on so many instances it's just a shame that the player movement feel so stiff. I had a hard time trying to run the ball in relation to the camera but that's minor since I just dove right in to the game and not check out the tutorial.

I will get the PS3 demo and try it out again, but at least for right now, it's a rent. As much as I love the game of football, I just don't know if the final product will wow me. We'll see.
