Tecmo Bowl Throwback Review Stuck
Posted on April 28, 2010 at 04:11 PM.

This is Tecmo Bowl.

In literally every sense, this is Tecmo Bowl. If the game had the real players and teams from it's inagural season, I could've swore this was the same game. And while in gaming, that's usually considered a bad thing, in this instance, it's mostly good.

Sometimes a new coat of paint is all a game really needed.

When I played a game with Kansas City against Buffalo, I immediately smiled when I saw the playbooks were the exact same. I immediately went to my Tecmo Bowl bread and butter: the toss sweep. Why did I expect anything less? I ran for nearly 200 yards and won the game 28-20 and somewhere along the way, realized I was having a lot of fun.

I also played a few other games this afternoon and it was like a tidal wave of memories were flooding over me. Each team, sans the names and funky logos, was pretty much the exact same they were in the original game.

I do have some gripes. There could have been some more work done on the modes to maybe add true franchise style multi-season support or something, especially at a $10 price tag. I also wish editing options were more robust, but I understand the limitations both legally and practically speaking there.

In the end, if you want to play Tecmo Bowl with a fresh coat of paint -- this is an awesome way to do that. Just beware I feel the $10 price tag is a bit high in my opinion. But in the end, this is Tecmo Bowl in it's purest form. The gameplay is excellent still, but the fact nothing was done to the game is both a blessing and a curse, so don't expect any surprises along the way. Get it if you want to relive your glory days the right way or if you want to experience what the hype is all about.

Chris, how limited exactly is the editing? Can you edit the names of the teams and players? How about the Jerseys, can they be edited at all? At least the gameplay is where it needs to be

You can edit team names and players.

I don't think Jerseys can be edited, at least I didn't see an option for that. If I just overlooked it then I'll be a very happy man and you can add a half-star to this rating

I was definitely getting excited yesterday strategizing through play guesses like I always used to. Good times! I love the guessing system.

Nice write-up, GGP. Tecmo Super Bowl’s Y Generation is about to unleash their need for TSB.
…And without all of the classic bugs that the developers left in Tecmo Bowl Throwback (like the NT Dive).

Did they really name that site..SuperTecmoBowl.com? Ugh. I can't stand when people call it that.

The editor thinks that the price is too high... I disagree...Madden and NCAA Football price of 65 dollars are too high for a mediocre football game..

Is it out for PS3 yet? I heard it came out last Wednesday for XBOX Live!
