The WOW factor is gone.... Stuck
Posted on April 19, 2010 at 06:01 PM.

I've been reading on some initial reactions to NCAA Football 11 and the gameplay video and whatnot over the past couple of hours. It seems as if there is a sizeable sect of people who are unimpressed with the product, and while I understand that sentiment, I also think it's because of unrealistic expectations at this point. In all honesty, I highly doubt any of the yearly titles are able to have you watch their initial video and have you proclaim 'wow' with your jaw dropped to the floor. That just isn't happening for the next several years.

I'm not saying games shouldn't have some core features they are still missing from the last generation, but I am saying that if you are looking to be blown away by initial footage of any of our common yearly products in this genre for the rest of this generation: you are likely going to be sorely disappointed with each product.

From basketball, to baseball, to hockey, to football to whatever other sport you are looking for, the things that just make us gamers go 'WOW' are likely gone for the rest of this generation. I think NCAA Football 11 has made some significant strides in the visuals department over last year, but the game in motion will undoubtedly be a disappointment for many expecting a game to look twice as good as the previous year's edition.

Don't take me as an apologist either, if you've read my blogs you know I have a lot of major beefs with sports gaming. But I also think it's highly unrealistic to expect games to be so much better in such a short amount of time that they cause your jaw to drop. I think the 'WOW' factor is long gone this generation and in it's place are the small to moderate yearly improvements as developers try to fine tune their engines while maximizing sales.

What do you think about NCAA's first gameplay footage? Do you think the 'WOW' factor is gone this generation? Sound off!

NCAA needs to weed out the bad animations. They have plenty of good animations, but it seems that the ones you see over and over again are the bad ones (e.g., WR catching the ball on his hip). I don't know, I just see the game in motion and am reminded how I haven't really enjoyed an NCAA title the last few years. I lost a lot of enthusiasm for this year – so I think it was a mistake for EA to release this video. You could have told me this was from last year's game and I would have completely believed you.

I agree the WOW factor is gone from most games, but for me it is the online stuff that keeps me playing. I have a yearly NCAA OD that I play in and the Madden OS Vets league is the only reason that I even still play Madden, so while there is no more wow if they can continue to build online dynasties/franchises I will continue to play/buy these games.

I don't expect a huge improvement but a smaller one with the NCAA 09 camera angle would be very nice!

This series is what made me become a fan of college football. My interest has slowly decreased over the past two years since I have been disappointed with the 09 and 10 versions.

I want to get that pumped up feeling to play this game back like I had for 05, 06, and 07 on last gen. I don't have unreal expectations for the game, but I just want it to get me excited again, and make me look forward to football. This is the time of year where I would start getting into it with the Draft, and Spring games, but so far not yet, and I'm still more into the NBA Playoffs and playing NBA 2K10. That has not been the case for some time. I really just want to get into football again.

So please NCAA 11, have improved gameplay, all of the uniform combinations, all of the accessories, better presentation, and a more authentic college feel to the game like with the crowds. I know some of these issues have been addressed, and made known...but I am completely not sold yet. Thanks.
