I'm back and finally blogging again! So for all two or three of you who missed me, thanks for the well wishes and concerns! In case you are interested -- which I'm unsure of -- I was either making national media rounds for this tornado video or I was just plain sick.
Ok my excuses are out of the way...now onto my main point today: MLB '10: The Show is a victim of the series recent successes.
I'm a bit shocked about the negative blowback from many about this year's game, moreso from the source of a lot of those complaints and not that they are actually there. I would expect people to complain about the game's numerous bugs as they have every year, but The Show is getting another charge levied against it: not being innovative enough.
This is where The Show is a victim of it's own success, and it's the trap the developers are soon to find out isn't a pretty one to be in. The Show is, without a doubt, the most realistic baseball game to ever hit video game shelves. However, it has gotten there through small incremental improvements over the past several years. Many long-time fans of The Show are claiming the game is not innovative enough and is, dare I even say it, stale.
Unfortunately, The Show is hitting a preverbial crossroads: developers have to change up the formula because the game will undoubtedly become stale in the coming years. However, doing so may very well ruin the game they've built and scare long timers off anyways. This is the quandry that success creates, sooner or later your fans will demand more than you can provide. NHL 2K learned the hard way that changing things up can sometimes have very negative results.
So what say you? Do you think next year's version of The Show should be the first step towards changing the gameplay up in order to keep the long time fans interested? Are you a long time fan? Is the game stale to you? Sound off!

MLB 10 The Show is the most realistic sports game on the market. It's hard to improve something which is almost perfect. If you compare MLB 10 and MLB 2k10, it's the day and night so we are already lucky to have a game like that and we don't need to complain about that.

I would like to see them go with an analog control scheme similar to the mvp college series. Of course, this would be an option, and not replace the default button system, similar to the way they are handling the RTP this year.
They don't have to go down the gesture path for pitching. To me that system makes no sense from a physical pitching stand point.
The game definitely needs to "refresh" its feel. As it stands, it's a great game, but its mechanics are starting to show their age.

I say implement heavy customization. Gameplay is solid, atmosphere to me is great. A new announce team would help to give the presentation a new coat of paint for the future. Fluxuating batting averages and e.r.a.'s as you play a season would be cool and even cooler if the announce team could referance how hot or cold a player is or was as the season progresses. Total editing customization of all teams meaning choose the team colors of the helmets, tops, bottoms, socks, cleats, etc, using a color pallete and when playing, being able to choose what helmet you want to wear with what top, what pant color to wear, what sock color to wear and so on. ( Of course only allow the team original uni's online so it doesn't get out of hand and keep respect for the MLB brand.). As mentioned by others, it's hard to improve something that's good already but a few ingrediants in my opinion would give it some kick for 2011.

I do not think the Show is stale at all. Every year, they make strides that have me saying..."wow, I can't believe they added this in". The one thing that I would look to change is the commentary. In my opinion, MLB 2k10 shines with its commentary and if the Show can somehow mimic that, an already awesome game would be better.

This game is off da chain folks! bugs yes, so did 09.. fixes cometh.. yes.. once all the kinks are worked out.. it will still be da show! breathe it in! bask in it! wonder if they use the euphoria engine for next year, cg graphics, real minor league teams including single A ... still the best though..
was wondering why microsoft bought both high heat and all-star baseball rights and yet, no baseball game from them, ever!! could you imagine high heat mixed with all-star depth on a next gen console??? ummmm.. high heat.. lol!

As much as I hate to say it...I totally agree. The Show is the most realistic, graphically impressive baseball game to date this year. However, I played so much of the Show (since it first launched on the PS2, and then played each years game year-round) that I'm just about bored with the gameplay. I recently bought a 360 since most of my friends don't have PS3s and I feel left out of their online leagues. I begrudgingly bough MLB2k10 so I could play online with them. After playing 2k, IMO it is inferior to the Show in every way, yet I am having more fun with 2k10, and I think it is solely for the reason that I have played the Show's current gameplay out to the point I am bored with it. It pains me to say it but it's true. So, the plan is to play 2k10 exclusively until the OS Community Rosters come out for the Show. Hopefully by then I'll be so used to 2k10 that the Show will seem fresh when I switch back.....hopefully

what rondoman said, ya, the minor leagues dont exactly have a players assocciation, so the show, or 2k for that matter, or anyone else, cannot use a players name or likelyness unless they've played in the majors at least once, that why we wont see aroldis chapman or stephen strasburg in the roster updates until they make their mlb debutes.
personally, the show is fine, i dont really care about the swing stick or whatever you call it, (whatever it would be called if they added it) i never really liked that in mvp ncaa or 2k, the only complaint i have is the pitching motions, i've been dieing to see them improve since 06, and they gradually have, but they just dont look realistic at all, scot shields' one looks fairly accurate, but thats about it, and i hope the franchiise trade bug is fixed soon, its getting very tedious to try and trade back for my players, but yeah, the show is the best out their, i dont see why everyone complains so much, one last thing, i didnt like the announcer change in 2k at all, i prefered john miller and joe morgan over the new guys, and i think it would be a bad idea to change rex, soup, and matt, it just wouldnt be an overall good idea, unless its mike krukow and duane kuiper, now i loved those guys from mvp, they made it exciting, even for the limited (in comparison to the show's amount of commentary) amount of commentary they had, but yeah, i think it'd be batter to say with what we got

I've been afraid for years now that the Show will eventually run out of room to improve without having to start anew.
Every year I think they can't outdo themselves again and they end up doing it.
Its not stale to me at all!!!! And as far as the bugs are concerned, I have news for all the complainers....there will NEVER be a perfect game. Period!

We are all game critics. We love our sports games. No matter how good a game theres always something about it that could be better. The show 10 is incredible. While not any drastic changes from last year, none were needed. If your a die hard baseball fan this game is a system seller for fans without a ps3. The only thing I see happening in sports games from year to year is the same commentary getting carried over. Other than that great job SCEA

I guess I am satisfied with the game itself, all I want is a more polished product out the door and I would be fine with tweaks here and there to innovate where it makes sense within the game and gameplay. For me, you pop in MLB 08 and then MLB 10 - the difference to me IMO is a big one. Not just from a graphics standpoint, but gameplay and AI overall have really moved up - From year to year, the title seems to make leaps rather than small improvements over an already solid formula.

The Show has gotten stale for me. The announcing crew needs to be replaced entirely imo but the biggest issue is the pitching. Meter and classic just pale in comparison to the gesture pitching in 2K10. It adds a whole mini game and fun aspect that isn't in the Show. And since pitching is half the game of baseball 2K10 has a new fun factor for me.
I could list a TON of things the Show does better than 2K10. It's FAR more polished, looks better, can produce great sim results, etc. But the core gameplay hasn't changed much over the years. And while it is great it can get stale. I love steak but eating it every night would get old.
The Show devs need to stop fighting the significant number of people that like analog controls and add them as an option.

Sure, MLB 10 is an incredibly impressive product that plays a great game of baseball, but at the end of the day the game has really done nothing to improve the genre of video game baseball as a whole. I know the main argument out there is that "hey, this is baseball, how can you really improve it". Well for an answer to that question, why not take a brief tour of the history of baseball gaming.
Remember the days when pitching and hitting was all done with one button press, from an overhead camera angle? Then someone decided to innovate and allow for directional hitting and pitching based on digital pad manipulation. Then someone came along and innovated the camera angle of the baseball game, shifting it to the traditional batter pitcher interface we see today. Then a game came up with the ability to switch defensive players to move them independently. Then someone thought it would be a great idea to add power and contact swing buttons. Then a separate bunt button was added. Then independent lead offs and steals were added. Then the dive button was added. Then cursor hitting was added. Then you could select and throw multiple pitches. Then, once diamond button layout controllers were invented, each button corresponded to a base. Then meter pitching was born. Then meter fielding was born. Then zone hitting came about. Then analog pitching. Then analog hitting. Then.................
The point of my long-winded (and I'm sure inaccurate timeline for you baseball game history gurus out there), is that baseball gaming has been a medium t hat has been continually innovated throughout the years. Every game that has been considered "great" in the last 20 years has done something to push the genre gameplay mechanics forward somehow. To give the Show series a free pass when it has simply perfected gameplay mechanics that were released in 2004 is a farce. Let's also not forget the series has several issues outside of gameplay that I find very hard to overlook (long load times, lack of dedicated playoff modes, no create a team, no create a stadium, far too many dynasty/RTTS bugs, and the same presentation for the last 4 years).
MLB 10 is truly a great baseball video game, but it definitely deserves the flack it's getting for not being innovative enough. In no way is this game a victim of it's own success- if anything it's a victim of a development team that refuses to think outside of the box to come up with original ideas that move baseball gaming to the next level.

i dont think innovation is the key to success going forward. i think they should concentrate more on producing a glitch free, great simulation of baseball. Each year they are going to add a couple small new features, which is fine as long as they produce a great product. i think that the people wanting massive innovation are never going to be satisfied, so there is no point in trying to appeal to them. baseball fans know that, even with its flaws, this game is the closest to good they are going to get and it's their best hope going forward.

They need to incorporate more of the User's input on Defense (While taking into account the players attributes.) User should be able to throw left, right, up and down. It's better this year, but man.... not where it should be.
