5-Star Rating Scale Supplemental Post

If you are one of the many who mistakenly try to equate five stars to a 100% scale, then this post is made specifically for you. Here is what my five-star ratings mean and how you can compare games I rate to previous games:

= An absolutely terrible and atrocious attempt at Sports Gaming. These are the types of games which create ill will for years to come because they are seriously flawed and broken. Think Madden NFL 06, NBA Live 06, Deca Sports, MLB 2K9 here. Avoid these games at all costs.

= These games are below average and mediocre in a lot of ways. They have serious flaws which detract from the overall experience but they do have a couple of redeeming qualities. Think of games like NCAA Football 07, NBA Live 07 and even Madden NFL 07 here. If you are a serious fan of the sport, these might be worth a look.

= These games are middle of the road games. While they have some serious problems they also have quite a few redeeming qualities which make them worth a bit of a look. Games like Madden NFL 09, NCAA Football 10, and Major League Baseball 2K10 fit within this category. Check these out if you are a fan of the sport.

= These are the games which start to get really good. They do have some problems, but the good outweighs the bad here. Expect quality like in Madden NFL 10, NBA 2K10, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, NHL 08 here. You want to check these games out.

= These are the classics and the games which define our genre. They may have flaws, but they are so good that those flaws are easily overlooked. Games like MLB '09: The Show, NHL 10, FIFA Soccer 10 are games which fit here. These games aren't perfect, but they are the pinnacles of our genre and should be owned by all sports gaming fans.

I like the star system. Makes it much easier to tell the overall quality of a game IMO.

4-star games are good but only worth a buy if you're a big fan of the sport.

5-star games are so good that they should appeal to every sports fan.

Everything else, you should probably just wait for it to hit the bargain bin.
