NBA Live: Quality comes, but the sales don't Stuck
Posted on January 18, 2010 at 03:03 PM.
NBA Live 10 did just about everything right in terms of quality. In almost every sense of the word, the franchise improved once again this year, putting it on at least a competitive footing with NBA 2K.

But when it comes to sales, it doesn't appear to be close.

By all accounts, NBA 2K10 is dominating the basketball games sales charts. In fact, it is very likely the combined sales of NBA Live 10 and NCAA Basketball 10 are not even close to outselling NBA 2K10. There is even an outside chance NBA Live 10's sales could decline over NBA Live 09's effort.

Gamers have effectively staged a revolt against the Live franchise. What was once one of the flagship titles for EA has now become one of it's poorest performers among the major sports titles.

I don't think current trends are going to lead to Live being cut from the EA lineup (or NCAA Basketball either, which EA holds an exclusive license), but the pressure to make up considerable ground sales wise will be hanging over the head of the Live team in future years.

What do you think Live can do to close the sales gap? On the same token, what can NBA 2K do to ensure the gap isn't closed? Sound off!

Despite the bugs and glitches, 2K was great this year. However, those very same bugs and glitches did make a mess of a game and if EA were to tweak and fix a few things here and there, I think the competition might be a lot tighter.

I dont think NBA Live has reached the quality of 2k basketball, and is behind by far, in terms of animations and ball-rim interactions to name a few. Let's take the up and under move for example. With the right stick you can do a plethora of movements while posting up, in Live you can only double tap the shoot button to do the same animation. To me that pretty much sums it up on how big the gap is between these two games, and the sales mirrors my theory. Having said that, Live is undoubtedly making strides in the right direction year after year, however with current development cycles, the gap won't be closed until next gen systems.

Well, I think this is actually a good case of the best product wins, NBA2k10 is totally awesome this year, and the series has owned Live in quality for years. Live is improved, but 2k10 is still nr 1. And to be fair I think reviewers gave EA a bit to much credit for being "close" to 2ks quality now, they arenīt there yet.

But I must say that 2 good games is good, so good stuff. But itīs nice to see that 2K get good sales after all their troubles.

2k10 Has alot of Innovating Features such as NBA TODAY, I love that, it keeps the commentary fresh and updated. they really made strides.

2k also has better graphics and presentation hands down, it's not even close. What 2k Needs to do is fix ONLINE, it's terrible, I took mines back because of that, they do not constantly update which is the point of living rosters.

What Live needs to DO.

1. Dynamic DNA is Awesome, they do a great job Here, But it should be free,Gamers who bought it used should not have to purchase a season of Dynamic DNA for like 20 bucks.
2. Better presentation, YOU HAVE ESPN AND ABC, WTF Better stats and overlays if you don't think that matters look at 2k's NBA TODAY,IT MATTERS.
3. REBUILD THE PLAYERS FROM GROUND UP. Player models are hidious and are too small in scale.
4.NBA 2k's shot STICK is the Best invention for B-Ball, make a deal for control rights sharing, Analog boxing rights for the Shot stick. MAke it so that the control schemes are not patent for both companies.

this series has hit rock bottom on next gen consoles. they have to earn sales by consistently putting out a quality product that is improving every year. live doesn't deserve to be the top selling game based on the crap that they have released from 2005-2009. 2010 was finally an improvement. build on that EA.

To me Live is garbage....the only thing Live has going for them is the Jerseys, Shoes, Accessories and the License of ESPN and TNT. The Last Good Live Game was Live 2003 to 2005. Live doesn't come close to 2k because of 2k's avid gameplay. I Say the only 2k needs to add is more jerseys, more shoes and accessories and since Live is getting the ESPN and TNT Broadcast, they can get the NBA TV Team and do like dunk of the night and top plays of the week and Weekly and Game Rap-ups(ala NFL 2k5)....

Live is headed in the right direction, but has a long way to go with catching up to 2k.

2k10 equals solid despite some complaints.

the expectation for these games are off the charts. realistically speaking the more complex these games become the more issues they'll have.
the support for the features alone in 2k, has delayed patches etc, which caused some backlash.

costs for producing and maintaining future titles will eventually affect the bottom line. lower priced games are probably out the question.

the only way this happens is if they strip away support and features.

folks are really reaching if they expect both titles to release bug free games.

I think Live will be A-OK if they continue to go in the direction they started off in, which I don't doubt. Live 10 was a HUGE step up from previous Lives and just like it was stated about the NHL series, it will eventually take over 2K's offering as word of mouth of how good Live has become spreads. It takes time.

Ok, it's a matter of opinion but I said from day one, using the right stick for shots doesn't make a console basketball feel like basketball, at all. The right joystick, imo, should be for moves, especially when the system like Iso-motion is so difficult to pull off. Live's feel is just that much more better, imo, and going to a shot stick would be terrible.
