My Top 5 Games of 2010.... Stuck
Posted on January 10, 2010 at 12:40 PM.
Every year, I always select my Top 5 games for the upcoming year as a bit of a pre-season power poll sort of thing. This year is no exception and I think my Top 5 is pretty solid this year. Here are the games I feel are going to be the best of the best when the dust settles on 2010 in over 350 days:

1. MLB '10: The Show
Given what we know, and given the series' track record, MLB '10: The Show is my pre-season favorite to be the game of the year once again. SCEA San Diego has it rolling, and nothing less than greatness is expected right now among fans.

2. FIFA 11
FIFA flew under the radar in 2009 due to it being a soccer game. However, the World Cup will help drive FIFA's popularity up this year, especially if the American team can make a magical run (not likely mind you). I'm expecting FIFA 11 to get the treatment FIFA 10 should have gotten: game of the year consideration.

3. NHL 11
NHL was our Game of the Year champ in 2008, but it sputtered this year, perhaps there was a recoil to people not wanting to crown a repeat champ with so many good options. I expect NHL will have a chance to make a run at the game of the year once again, but it will ultimately fall short.

4. UFC 2010 Undisputed
UFC 2010 Undisputed is the Boise State equivalent in the rankings for 2010, the game isn't a traditional power but it is certainly going to be on many's radar this year. And while many felt the rookie season had more than enough issues to make a run at the top spot in 2009, I feel 2010 is going to be a banner year for the franchise.

5. Madden NFL 11
Madden NFL 10, despite the hate it does generate, was a very good game in 2009. Madden NFL 11 will continue this trend into 2010. Expect the gameplay to be refined, franchise to be revamped a bit, and the usual one year update to shine.

Just for fun, here are my 6 - 10 games as well:

6. NBA Live 11
7. NBA 2K11
8. NCAA Football 11
9. EA Sports MMA
10. (Tiger Woods) PGA Tour 11

What does your Top 5 look like?

This is a very cool idea. Here is my predictions:

1. FIFA Soccer 11
FIFA 10 has got me semi-obsessed with the sport, and has taken soccer gaming to a whole new level that I never thought would be possible by EA. FIFA 11 is sure to add to the amazing gameplay in FIFA 10, and hopefully make improvements where it is needed, such as the Manager Mode.

2. NHL 2K11
NHL 2K10 is, without a doubt, with the correct sliders, the greatest game of simulation hockey ever created. It is truly the epitome of "diamond in the rough". With that said, the chances that the series are over are about 50/50 in my mind. But, if 2K11 gets made, it will be a big turnaround for the series. It will be a better game than 2K10 out of the box, and for that reason, it will garner much better publicity. Oh yeah, 2K might actually advertise the game this year!

3. NHL 11
In my opinion, NHL 10 was absolute rubbish. Sure, it looked sexy, but the AI issues were too much for me to overcome, and has made the game unplayable. It is the most overrated sports title I have ever come across. With that in mind, I think the team at EA will make the AI changes needed, and improve upon the already beautiful interface and graphics and this will be great again, like NHL 09 was. Where this series needs a major overhaul is in the player models. With the success that NHL 2K10 had in making excellent player models (even 4th line players look like there human counterparts- but there is still some mistakes across the board), I believe that NHL 11 will take notice to that and improve in this coming outing.

4. Madden NFL 11
Madden 10 was/is fantastic. The online franchise has made this games replayability skyrocket for me. But, what is missing is CONTRACTS! If Madden 11 adds in the ability to deal with contracts in your online franchises, it will be even better. There can be some AI tweaks to make the game even more realistic, and improvements done with the animations (see Backbreaker for great tackling animations). Madden 11 has the chance to skyrocket to number 1 of my list if it does the little things correctly.

5. MLB 10: The Show
The only reason this game isn't higher on my list is due to the fact that I don't follow baseball as closely as football and hockey, but that doesn't change the fact that MLB 11 will be a wonderful game. Looking at what is already confirmed for the game makes it a must-own for me, even though I'm not a baseball nut. Hell, they could have just repackaged MLB 09: The Show with a roster update, and the game would be great...ok, that's an exaggeration. But, the point is that MLB 09: The Show was such a great game that the developers don't have TOO much to change. With the emphasis coming to the online league updates, this title will be another great reason to own a Playstation 3.

Ugh, you can't edit these things? I hate grammatical errors, and I ended up opening my response with one. "Here are my predictions" is what is should say. Sorry. :-)

MY List is as follows:

1. NBA Live 11 : This is the year they either surpass NBA 2K or they will forever be lacking that "one" thing

2. Madden 11: Madden will either bury 2K5 with a STELLAR presentation, IMPROVED gameplay, and BETTER features.....or Madden will toil in obscurity until next gen....and that could be a loooong time.

3. NBA 2K11: 2K is going to need to improve player movement, MYPLAYER in all areas, and it needs a a refresher! A surprise even.

4. MLB 10: The Show..........the show will continue its domination of baseball!

5. NCAA Football 11: Its a serious make or break year for NCAA Football 11......they need to step up with the appropriate presentation, better gameplay (no more hyper football) and they need to add several OPTIONS and FEATRUES.

I don't know about you guys, but the sports game I look forward to year in and out is Madden. All ways is and all ways will be. Honorable runner up is MMA and NBA Jam. These will be the only sport's titles I buy in 2010. And I'm out like the Philadelphia Eagles!

MLB 10
Madden 11
NCAA 11
NBA 2k11
FIFA 11

# 7 Shinyhubcaps @ Jan 10
NBA 2K always has and always will be better than NBA Live. Also look for some Skate 3 love, Gran Turismo 5... Backbreaker?

# 8 nbluedevils @ Jan 10
1. Fifa World Cup 10: the soccer game that finally captures the American audience.
2. UFC Undisputed 2010: the fastest growing sport in America gets a game born of pure hype and adrenaline.
3. MLB 10: The Show: another solid offering from the industry's most consistent game.
4. Madden 11: more tweaks and small additions, but no game-breaking features.
5. Backbreaker: sales will be weak, but the game will turn out to be more than a glorified tech-demo.

MLB 09: The Show and FIFA 10 were easily the best sports games of 2009. I'll be surprised if they aren't again in 2010.

I know these aren't all 'new' 2009 games, but if I go by the sports games I enjoyed the most last year, my list would be:

1) The Bigs 2
2) NBA 2K10 (absolutely loved My Player mode despite the bugs)
3) Super Tecmo Bowl (ok, VERY old, but I put some serious time in it on the SNES, don't believe me, ask Bo. Bo Knows I played Super Tecmo Bowl.)
4) Blitz the League II
5) All Pro Football 2K8

Note the games above are the ones I enjoyed. I played Madden / NCAA this year as well as the new TopSpin on the XBox 360, but all 3 of those games provide an equal amount, if not more, frustration than pleasure.

MLB The Show -- No other game emulates its sport better

Madden 10 -- I am still playing this game and having hella fun with it

FNR4 -- A game that has its haters but the game forced me to box, not slug...Great visuals and the create-a-boxer was awesome

NCAA Basketball 10 -- Not perfect but a much improved edition to a potentially soon to be extinct franchise...

NHL 10 -- I enjoyed the enhancements made to the controls and each year this game better emulating the sport of hockey....Would like to see an improvement in the visual department

I never played FIFA but I know that the series is one of EA's best. I played Live 10 and NBA 2K10...I just hate pro basketball...It's not the same as it was...

I'm sure MLB 10 will be a great game.

I HOPE NCAA 11 is a great game.

Baseball and football are the only two sports games I consistently buy. I'm almost shocked though to think that I may move to a bi-annual buying cycle if improvements don't get better on a yearly basis. NCAA 11 concerns me.
