2K Sports: The Inevitable Demise? Stuck
Posted on December 18, 2009 at 11:26 PM.
I almost feel like I'm watching a train wreck in slow motion. You see what is coming, you can't do anything about it, and the end result is all but certain.

2K Sports is dying, and not in a grandiose we'll fight you to the last man 300 style death, but in a curled up in a dark, cold corner all alone kind of death. With the recent spread of rumors (or reports depending on your standard for that sort of thing) that Take Two is at least considering dumping NHL 2K from it's lineup, you can't help but feel the time is coming soon when something has to give.

The top brass at the top of Take Two have already admitted that the Major League Baseball franchises are all but disasters, so the only other game in the 2K Sports lineup which is viable just might be NBA 2K. Maybe they can rename it 2K Sport after the MLB license expires?

Sure, longtime 2K fans are grimacing at what I'm saying, and I'm sure many will have some great arguments to the contrary. However, falling sales plus a shrinking game lineup plus only one mega-blockbuster profitable franchise doesn't quite give me confidence 2K Sports can keep this up.

There has to be a new plan going forward. Can 2K Expand it's game's lineup? Can a new publisher buy the brand and put it to better use? Our own Jim Harris has a '2K Survival Guide' we will be posting either over the weekend or early next week he wrote even prior to the NHL 2K news from today to help answer some questions.

I'm going to take closer looks at 2K's status in the coming week myself. However, it really doesn't look good. However, it's now your turn. Do you think 2K is on the path to destruction? No matter your opinion there, what can be done to bolster the brand?

mine, too, valdarez... but remember, we are in the minority. For the most part, the lack of NFL license and no multi-year franchise really kept a lot of football fans away.

People seem to have selective memories.

In boxing, playing "shell" can only get you so far. For you to win, you have to throw punches back, and not be afraid to take risks.

Has anyone noticed how many risks EA Sports has taken with their titles?

- Pro-Tak in Madden 10
- 360 Dribbling, Goalie Control, & Virtual Pro in FIFA 10
- New Physics engine and presentation in Fight Night Round 4
- First-person fighting in NHL 10
- WiiMotion Plus in Tiger Woods 10

What has 2K Sports done, except re-hash the same old formula it's already had. Everyone focuses on graphics, and un-controlled animations, but there's almost no hope for innovation.

You can't put a fresh coat of black gloss paint over a beat-down, rusted white car. EA has taken some risks this year, and, for the most part, they've all been sucessful.

2K is overrated. One football game released in 2005, and everyone's s lovalist...
