This year's Game of the Year is going to be quite possibly one of the better races in recent memory. Depending on who you ask and when, you are likely to get responses which range anywhere on the release calendar spectrum from MLB '09: the Show to Forza Motorsport 3. Who are the top contenders?

Taking into account how both OSers and the OS Staff will vote, as well as a number of other factors, these games are the one's I could see winning game of the year next month:

MLB 10: The Show - A lot of people felt that The Show got snubbed last year, both on staff and on OS. With this year game being even more quality, I could easily see it winning the gold. Odds: 5-1

NHL 10 - The defending champ is both bigger and badder than it was last year, but I'm not sure it has the same level of aura last year's game had. It seems like, to me at least, people aren't going to vote NHL in. However, I was surprised NHL won last year too. Odds 7-1

FIFA 10 - There are a ton of people who absolutely love this game, and you are looking at one of them. EA Sports best selling franchise is going to have a serious push for Game of the Year this year, but the anti-soccer sentiment crowd might just be too much to overcome. Odds 7-1

NBA 2K10 - NBA 2K10 is a solid improvement over 2K9. Unfortunately for NBA 2K10, I just don't see it garnering enough support despite being a good game since NBA Live has attracted a large number of voters away from 2K10 this year. Odds: 10-1

Forza Motorsport 3 - Based on sheer quality alone, there is no equal this year. But Forza has a few things working against it 1)it's a 360 exclusive title and 2)many OSers won't vote for a racing game. As much as it might deserve it, Forza probably won't be taking home the gold. Odds: 15-1

The Show could win it but their lack of interaction on OS after the release regarding simple problems like the DH fatigue annoyed me. I'm still waiting for an answer as to why they screwed that up. It does bother me when developers promote the game like crazy pre-release and then largely disappear afterwards (other than media guy Russell). The patch they released was lousy and didn't even tackle many known issues. I know that shouldn't affect my thoughts on the game but it does. The fielding in the game needs to improve a LOT as the error system for manual fielding was one of the worst I've seen (I went over 40 games without a single fielding error and the slider didn't do anything - I did see plenty of throwing errors). But the batter pitcher interface is darn near perfect and that is the core of a baseball game which is why most people consider this the best baseball game ever. The atmosphere is good but is showing signs of aging.

No listing of basketball games though?

NBA 2K10 is in my Top 5 Rudy.

I did forget to put NBA Live 10 at the bottom though, but it was on my pre-writing list...so just a mild oversight, fixed now

Whoops! Must have missed that. Football and baseball are my two favourites and I found both genres disappointed in various areas this year. I think next year could be a really great year though.

I wouldn't be surprised to see FIFA take the cake this year. Many are saying that the game wasn't a big enough improvement from 09 so I may be seeing through rose-colored glasses at 10 since I skipped 09.

The AI in FIFA poses a realistic challenge, the gameplay is much more deliberate than PES's, and there are major differences between "scrubs" and "stars" on the pitch. Very impressed by this year's edition, moreso than even The Show, NHL 10 and NBA 2K10 (yes, I just said that).

Forza 3 is simply incredble, however, both visually and gameplay-wise. Probably the best "bang for your buck" in any "sports" title this year (I use the term "sports" loosely however).

UFC 2009 and madden 2010 were the best this past year.

Granted, I only played The Show on PSP, but I was not thrilled. I still had more fun with High Heat Baseball on my PC (oh, where have you gone?). The inability to check your swing, and the extreme difficulty in determining ball/strike when batting (at least for me), killed the fun for me.

If not for the frequent franchise feeezes, I would say NHL 10 in a runaway. Tremendous game, and a big improvement over last year.

GlennN, the fact you brought up High Heat makes me grin from ear to ear. I absolutely loved that franchise back in the day...which is both a sign I'm getting older and gaming is progressing onwards. Both of which are kind of sad developments too.

And as expected, the opinions here are about as diverse as you could imagine. That's why I'm excited about the Game of the Year Awards this year

Well, MLB 10 hasn't yet been released but MLB 09 was awesome. Here are my faves:

1) MLB 09 -- Best console baseball game ever
2) Madden 10 -- Still so many Madden haters but EA took huge leaps with this franchise
3) NBA Live 10
4) FIFA 10
5) FNR4 -- Again, another game that has its detractors but this game made you box instead of fight

I was disappointed in the Show. Offline it was great, but the online experience was not a good one for me. When discussing game of the year, I think you have to be solid in both arenas. I'm not a soccer guy, but I'm digging FIFA. It has been a blast to play.
