Laying the groundwork for next week....
Posted on September 18, 2009 at 03:08 PM.
There have been a lot of people wondering why next-gen games simply aren't all that we thought they could be. In an attempt to try to explain why games simply aren't as good as we thought they were supposed to be, I'm going to use three factors to try to explain why sports games seem to have plateaued:

1)Possible Realism
2)Fun Factor
3)Development Resources

I'm not sure where we'll ultimately be led...but I've got four graphs for you to digest right now. Here they are...we'll discuss them more in detail starting next week! We might even add one or two!

Fun Factor vs. Possible Realism
Fun Factor vs. Development Resources
Possible Realism vs. Development Costs
Development Costs vs. Possible Realism

Look forward to the read. In my opinion, I believe EA feels like they've plateaued in regards to realism. Why else would they take a controversial stance in 2006 by implementing QB vision. If you follow Madden from year to year; you can see EA's primary aim is to make Madden acceptable to the mainstream NFL public, similiarly to fantasy football. I truly believe this is the reason they fired David Ortiz and hired Ian cummings. David's last big addition was the weapons system, which some thought were arcadish, and Ian's team has overhauled the ratings and stats, while allowing you to connect via the Iphone. I blogged a while back, asking the madden public.....would you like your madden to play like a sim or a video football game? Its a great read
