The Reviews Are Coming in: Madden is for Real Stuck
Posted on August 10, 2009 at 06:18 PM.
I want to preface this by saying I have only played the demo, as I am one of the unlucky ones who hasn't found a place selling the game early.

However, I am very impressed at the (so far) critical acclaim Madden NFL 10 is getting. Not only that, but OSers who own the game are overwhelmingly giving the game positive marks so far. There are dissenters in the bunch, but I honestly think that only the most die-hard and bitter 2K football fans will find reason to hate Madden NFL 10.

For the rest of us, Madden NFL 10 looks to be (finally) the series' arrival on next-gen. It certainly took long enough, and I'm sure many will attest to that simple fact, but the bar has been raised even within Tiburon itself. NCAA Football honestly looks bush league at this point compared to Madden, as Madden is now easily more than a year ahead of NCAA.

As with all titles, it is still too early to tell if Madden is truly a game of the year type of game at this point, but the early returns are similar to our past winners. That has to have the folks down in Orlando smiling from ear to ear.

I can say that I love the game, for the most part. Certain things promised don't seem to be but a patch is either gunna be released soon after the game's official release or maybe on the day of the game's release. Pro-Tak is really something to behold, at times, and I can't help to think of how it will be improved upon, next year. QB gameplay is great with the differing passing styles and finding passing lanes is a MUST it seems, this year, just like in NCAA 10. There's is a lot of goodness going on with the game and as for NCAA 10, I hate to say that I have to use my $40 trade in value card to trade it in toward the rest of my Madden 10 purchase because I can no longer deal with the ncw 'crackhead like' movement of NCAA 10. I still love the game but I love the slower, methodical gameplay of 'normal' in Madden 10 even more. It's too much of an adjustment going between the 2 games.

Bottomline, from an overall standpoint, Madden 10 is great stuff but don't think their aren't some issues with the game. I'm just not the type to 'over-microscope' the negative. McLuvin' the new Madden.

Where's the OS review?

While I don't think it would be as bad as Madden has been the past few years I'm preserving my judgment until I actually play the game. The full game that is. I played the demo and hated the game speed, but it was locked on slow I think so I'll have to see how the other options play and if Franchise mode is actually any good this year which it seems to be. The only gripe I have is that it took EA this long to make a solid game. My advice is don't listen to ANY reviews or hype until you play the game for yourself then you can compare your opinion with what the rest of the community has to say.

I think that's been the achilles' heel of those people who have waited in line for the midnight release of Madden the past 3-4 years and were bugging out like they were Tyrone Biggums at a free crack giveaway. Or maybe they actually thought the game was good, to each his own then. Just don't fall for the hype until you play it for yourself, and if it's good then great we finally have a decent next gen NFL game to play. For now though I'll be chillin with Dan Marino and Barry Sanders in APF2k8. We'll see if upcoming months of my life are going to be devoted to my Dolphins chise or not. (hope so)

I think it's a great sign that EA loosened their reviews embargo that was in place in years past. Previously, reviews would only hit at midnight of the day of the release.
With these earlier reviews posted already, it leads me to think that EA is much more confident this year in allowing companies to publish their opinions and then let customers take a week to gather all the opinions. With the previous embargo deadline dates, it almost seemed like EA was making you decide what to do weeks before the pro's could take a look at the game.
In other words, WOOHOO.

I don't hate it, but I do think it's still inferior to All Pro Football where it really counts, which is things like animations, physics, momentum, AI, etc.

They made some nice improvements to the passing game and the presentation, but aside from that, it's still pretty much the same Madden, which means all the old AI and physics flaws are still around.

2K's presentation is still light years ahead of Madden, but gameplay wise, Madden is taking over this year.

Madden has gotten great reviews the last three years now, however 08 and 09 were both much worse than the reviews made them seem. Granted the game has slowly progressed, but still, it has yet to be as good as all the reviews claim. We'll see if that trend continues with Madden10.

why do you have to call us bitter 2k fans??? Im loving the game. Im actually playing 12 minute quarter on all pro with acc clock at 15 sec. The presentation its nowhere near 2k5's but its a good start for madden. Now all I want for next years madden is the way you were able to tell your LB's and DE's to drop for coverage in 2k5. In madden you have to highlight the player and the tell him what to do. This takes too much time in 2K you had left bumper for Secondary players. Once you would press the left bumper or trigger a button would be assign to each player in the secondary. Lets just say A was for your safety and you wanted him to help out cover fitzgerald you would press A for you safety and then the letter of the receiver. The same was for LB's and DE's, you would press the right bumper or trigger and you would tell him what to do. For example I would send my OLB on a blitz and drop my DE into coverage. I really hope they add this next year... Ian if you are reading this please think about it.

I'll give it a few weeks after release to judge if its the real deal or not.

@thehitokiri

I think that's a stereotype of 2k fans. We're suppose to be rabid fanboys and hate everything Madden when in actuality seeing as how Madden is the only NFL game I want nothing more than see it top 2k5. For as many 2k fanboys there are just as many EA fanboys.

Yet another 'state the obvious but cover all bases' blog here. Why cant someone form a proper opinion rather than sit on the fence until all the 'Big Boys' decide what view you have to take and then you will claim that you agreed with that all along.

What do you do at a toin coss?

Heads or Tails?

....can I have both please :rollthem****ingeyes:

NFL2k5. The most overrated sports game ever.

Who cares about presentations. I would rather have no stadium or any of the junk on the sideline to play the greatest football game ever. It's gameplay. That's what makes you keep coming back. I don't play to see a coach throw a tantrum on the sideline. I could care less.

As far as Gameplay this Madden has already failed because it's to slow. I'm pushing the stick and there seems to be a delay in what's happening on the field. So when Madden goes online your not going to be able to change the speed for ranked games.

Far as I'm concerned the game already sucks. I read the previews on this site and anything EA hands these reviewers they eat up. If you don't think that having EA on this site has something to do with the reviews you are fooling yourself. If EA were really listening to the consumer why would they slow the game down.

Has the speed of football slowed down or are humans getting faster. This is supposed to be some sort of sim isn't it. Then please explain to me how slowing the game down makes it better. I heard the same BS about 2k9 from the reviews on this site.

Slowing it down makes it better.
They couldn't be more wrong.

These are sports based on strength, athleticism, and speed. To feel like your on the field shouldn't you feel the speed in a video game.

When a developer slow's the game down it actually means you will have less control of what's going on on the field.

It means the time for which you push a button on your controller you will actually have a delay in what you see happening.

It means they can't get there animations to work the way they want them to.

Imagine taking a racing game that simulates the speed of a Nascar event and then the developers saying let's slow the game down.

It's incomprehensible.

EA made the demo bad on purpose. They fooled everyone including Apex who at first was loving the game.Like me the more he plays it the more flaws you see. When folks play the real game(I have it as well) they are going to saying how great it is.Have not we all said it or heard it.IT IS WAY BETTER THAN THE DEMO.It is however the demo is not the standard. What I see on Sunday is .The more you play it the more you are going to see the same flaws as 09.Route based passing is terrible.Pass Defense is a joke.Ratings do not mean a thing.Missed calls on the field.I had a safety on Big Ben .All the refs missed it.No way to challenge it.That over the top animation with catching is old and unrealistic.I have lost the ball when clearly my QB's arm was moving foward. No chance to challenge.Everything I see on Sunday , right? EA has made improvements but this game engine is broken.I know .We can Patch it and we will get it next year in Madden 11 .Im glad I did not pay for it
