NCAA Football 10 (Blog #3): Playcalling Ratios Stuck
Posted on July 8, 2009 at 08:15 PM.
Many are wondering how many passes, etc. the computer calls. So here are some hard numbers to chew on for my games so far in dynasty and one play now. The first number is the number of times the computer called a running play and the second number is the number of times the computer called a passing play:

14/16
9/31
32/35
18/25
17/30
12/31
19/26

I will say the computer isn't stupid. In a situation where it should have ran (late close lead at the end of the game) the computer ran the ball 80% of the time and the passes were mostly screens and short passes, it didn't try to go deep.

Overall, the computer was pass heavy. Only in close games did the computer continue to run the ball. It looks as if the playcalling is a mixed bag, as the AI does abandon the run too early, but it doesn't look to pass when it should be running. Thoughts? Questions?

Could you tell differences in the playcalling styles of various offense types (i.e. USC's pro-style offense vs. Texas Tech's spread vs. Georgia Tech's option)? Presumably, USC would be more balanced, Texas Tech would be very pass-happy, and Georgia Tech would run a ton.

Do teams adapt to their specific personnel, i.e. if I hurt a team's quarterback and the backup is rated poorly, or just has a lowly-rated quarterback to begin with, will the team call more run plays?

Have the cpu teams been mixing it up with their RB's or does the starter get 98% of the carries like in 09? Also, could we see the breakdown of passes completed and attempted for the cpu teams as well as #'s of ints. Thanks.

Jay - The starter runs it almost exclusively...unfortunately.

Krioniq - There are differences so long as the AI doesn't fall behind, then it gets way too pass happy. When the AI gets ahead, it will run the ball to melt the clock, so the stats in some games aren't completely indicative of how much the computer might've ran or passed otherwise depending on the situation.

Are you still playing the game on AA or have you bumped it up to Heisman? Since you said previously that you thought the game was easier than last year I was wondering if you could make the leap to Heisman and see if you still felt the same way.

Well, I'm still gettin' this - Lol...

So are the interceptions toned down or is it still an issue? I still thought in the demo the ints and robo-qb was far to prevelent.

So even run heavy teams, still pass way too much?

It's no wonder... that has been my main complaint for the last 8 years. The computer passes WAY too much. And it has NEVER been fixed.

I remember playing Navy one time... it ran the ball about 15% of the plays. Awful. Purely awful.

That cpu system seems really smart. Are SOME teams run heavy. There are college teams that don't air it out very much.
