My Sports Gaming Pet Peeve Stuck
Posted on June 30, 2009 at 12:29 PM.
I have spent almost a week and a half writing cranky blogs about sports gaming and I think it's starting to wear at my psyche. After today, I think I'm going to write a lot of blogs with happy overtones in order to balance out my life.

But just for today, I want to share what I feel is the most annoying thing about sports video games, especially in this generation. It's half-hearted implementation of something that just ends up looking stupid, or it doesn't work, or it's just insignificant in it's implementation.

Examples: Empty desk at halftime in NBA 2K9. Mascots and 'better' sidelines in NCAA Football 09. Awesome looking fans, all four different types, in MLB 09: The Show.

I'm all for developers delivering these things to us (as my last week of blogs demonstrates). But don't insult our intelligence. If a halftime show is touted, I want to see a halftime show -- not some poor excuse that was put together abruptly and just looks bad. If a feature isn't going to be fully fleshed out, I'd rather that extra time had gone into making the gameplay better all around.

So what about you? What is your sports gaming pet peeve? Do you agree with me that half hearted implementation is annoying? What other things do you find annoying? Sound off!

In this day, with these powerful machines...there's no excuse for all the sports titles lacking on halftime or intermission reports. Thats should be a foregone conclusion by now.

I actually have three:

1. One-year development cycles. I know this will never change, but this is why we can never get what we want in terms of presentation and what not on the next-gen consoles bc developers are too busy fixing broken games from the year before as opposed to working on the following year's.

2. Catering to a casual crowd. While a lot of video games are played by a casual crowd, ie Call of Duty, most people who are playing sports games a lot are die-hard fans, or at least more than casual fans. So while I understand they want to broaden the audience, it just isn't feasible for sports gaming, unless it's on the Wii.

3. Exclusive licenses. Enough said.

In-game saves. In this day and age, there is no excuse for not having the ability to save during a game.

That's a great one GlennN!

That plus sim-to-end which was in early 2K titles is always something I really despise. NCAA Football's super-sim feature is a godsend for me for that very reason

Cheese. When there is a flaw in the gameplay that can be exploited, it's a gamekiller, IMO...

The lack of a true post game celebration. I know I won something important in a video game sense, but I want to feel like it by viewing more than two fist pumps and a high five on the field/court, etc. I get excited especially if it's a hard fought game, but I just don't think in-game it comes across as that big a deal without something more than a picture of the trophy won and "Would you like to continue to the off-season?"

The catering to casual fans thing doesn't bother me so much. It's smart business. If they just catered to us, there ROI wouldn't be as high. They have to hit a broad market while pleasing the core. Perhaps a better balance of this is needed. But I think right now they are throwing a lot against the wall to see what sticks. So I understand that.

Tackling in NCAA, I can't stand the way a running back is stood up and dropped on his back in NCAA. It looks like they are using that animation more in 2010. Running backs are compact and fast, I don't care who you are, you can't stop them in their tracks, uproot them and flip them on their backs. In NCAA it happens on every other play.

Two peeves I've found in games that I otherwise love are the following
1. Unrealistic calendars in career mode fighting games: ex: losing a whole week of training in UFC if you take a PR opportunity, Only 2 training sessions in tweleve weeks in FNR4.

2. Lack of significant training modes in games with a learning curve: ex: FIFA 09 only has the area mode..which lets you practice shooting and set pieces but doesn't let you practice passing, shooting with defenders around, etc. I learned from the FIFA podcast they're introducing a new training mode that is either 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 but it's "no rules." I hope they allow you to turn that off so one can actually practice.

I still get a little sick in the stomach every time I see a close up of the fans and bench in NCAA 09. Also why do developers get rid of small things like full team editing, why can't I decide to give my whole team high socks if I want. And while I'm venting on NCAA, what the hell happened to post game animations? How cheated are we supposed to feel after beating the #1 team in the country or winning the national championship and all we get is "and the final score here is" total lack of heart and imagination in my mind.
Makes you wonder how much of a fan these developers are?

Well I do hate the blatant disregard for many fans needs. If you not going to make a good half time show, you might as well just show us the stats and then focus on the gameplay.

Presentation, Presentation, Presentation. Some games completely lack pre and post game segments. Next Gen NCAA 10, Madden 09, MLB 09 to an extent...
