I Feel Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde... Stuck
Posted on June 19, 2009 at 11:28 AM.
After playing both the Fight Night Round 4 and NCAA Football 9.5, ahem..10, demos last night and this morning, I am a man who cannot decide which emotion is stronger, my incredible love for one or my pure and utter disdain for the other.

NCAA Football 10's demo reminds me a lot of NCAA Football 09, just with a bit more defense, a lot more turnovers, and pretty much the exact same package otherwise. Maybe it's the fact I have been playing this series for 10 years, but it's downright stale. Overall, it's the same exact game I've been playing for 10 years with incremental improvements. The game simply isn't all that much improved. It is improved, but this isn't a blow-away kind of season for NCAA. That could be a problem for many.

On the other hand, I can't stop playing the Fight Night Round 4 demo (well I've played it three times this morning at least, that counts right?). As much as I don't think NCAA Football 10 is going to be talked about as a great sports game, Fight Night Round 4 will almost certainly go down as one of the top games of the year. I was skeptical about how Fight Night could best UFC, but I am a skeptic no more. THQ's game was good, but Fight Night is simply going to be great.

So what do you think about both demos now that you've had some time to digest them? Am I way off base on either opinion? I (of course) don't think so, but let's get your thoughts!

FNR demo was fun. I'm a much bigger NCAA fan and I agree that the demo felt stale and uninspired. I didn't even want to play it much. I don't like the new camera.

I've been playing the NCAA demo some between last night and this morning, and I'm a little undecided about how I feel about it. I feel like it could be a decent game if the sliders are fixed and aren't watered-down like last year's post-patch sliders. I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it if the rosters and sliders are fixed and the graphics and sounds are finished. I feel like there was definitely more that the NCAA team could have done improvement-wise, but at least we have SEASON SHOWDOWN!! YES!! It's surely better than accurate rosters, sliders, and improved game-play!!
I haven't played the Fight Night Round 4 demo yet but I'm currently downloading it.

Reminds me of NCAA 09 all over again...atleast they redid Madden 10....

I was one of the early FN4 demo receivers when it was unleashed on May 15th and at first, I was thinking, "GREAT character models but the game still feels like FN3 a 'bit'" and I didn't get much too into it til a couple days later. Mind u, I have played FN3 since around the time I got it on release day for the PS2. Never got it when I got a PS3 for the PS3 because it was just a prettier version of a robotic game.
That being said, when I DID start getting into the FN4 demo, I noticed how much more fun and improved it was than FN3 and couldn't stop playing it for days.
Now, as for NCAA 10 which I'm about to play again for around the 6th time since last night, I dunno. I wasn't too excited about how the PS3 version looks. Player models look good when they show them up close but when the cam is far away, whoa-boy. UGLY! The models don't look sharp, at all, including the numbers and names on the jerseys. I thought maybe I had my sharpness up to high on my 1080p TV but I never adjusted it and just got used to it.
As for the gameplay, it's Madden 09, pretty much, which I can't complain about because I love Madden 09's gameplay. Plus they have some great new animations. I like the slower than the usual NCAA pace and can't really complain about much. There were some questionable things happening when I was whooping on the Gators in terms of how, toward the end of the game when the clock was already stopped at the end of a play, they would hurry up to the line but sit there til the play clock would tick almost all the way down then call a spike and fake spike play. That made NO sense to me but I take it as broken demo logic. The run animations that I seen in all the vids prior to the demo weren't in the PS3 demo, neither. The demo run animations look just like Madden 09's run animations, again. I don't remember how NCAA 09's looked because I didn't buy it and only played the demo but I think they were the same.
With that said, I still enjoy the demo. It's football but I'm not sure I will be picking this up.
Like I've said before, NCAA gets the new onfield gameplay tech intro'd in Madden the year AFTER Madden does, usually. That has ALWAYS been so I'm not upset at the lack of new tech in NCAA. I'm more of a Madden man, anyway, so whatever, but I do like some of the features they have in NCAA. Gameplanning is hot and I wish Madden woulda put that in this year and I like the play link feature.
I will keep playing the NCAA demo and maybe rent the final product to see if they cleaned up the PS3 version's graphics and make my decision to buy it, then. As for FN4, that is BOUGHT. I already have $10 on a pre-order so next week, I am on it.

About NCAA I share your feelings Chris, but didn't need to play the demo. That's what I felt when I saw the first video on the inside blog (that of pursuit angles), back in April. FNR will be great, unfortunately I'm not a big fan of boxing though.

I have to agree overall. NCAA 10 fels way too much like last years game. That said, at least we have Madden to look forward to right? As for FN4, I am not feeling as much as others, I wish there were an option for button config. I play 100% offline with games like this and wish it were at least an option. It basically ruined any chance of me buying that title. But that is just me.

I'm with ya on both Chris. I never could figure out why more of the upgrades they put in Madden weren't put into NCAA.

I'm not a big online guy. So Teambuilder and Season Showdown really don't excite to me. I was hoping for major improvements in presentation.

I can't believe there is still no Halftime Show. What year is this?? 2010?

The NCAA franchise is stagnate right now.

But if you compared NCAA 10 to NCAA 07 you would think the game had improved significantly. Keep that in mind when you compare NCAA 10 to FN4. FN3 came out over three years ago so the development cycle was substantially longer than the standard one-year cycle for the NCAA series.

I have already pre-ordered FN4. As for NCAA...yeah, not a huge difference in actual gameplay but I do like the Gameplanning feature, even if I don't truely understand how to use it yet. It also looks like they incorporated Madden's new injury system. Having played both Madden 09 and NCAA 09, NCAA has a different spirit since it is college. I'm debating between getting NCAA and enjoying it for the month before Madden drops or skipping it and focuing on other things. I just don't want to spend $$ only to see it sit in my pile, barely touched. Finally boritter has an excellent point...the FN4 team had a long to to develop their game and the difference is huge whereas a yearly franchise will often only see incremental improvements.

I agree with boritter. Madden and NCAA are year to year sequels. Whereas other game genres (RPG's, FPS, etc.) come out with something new every 2-3 years on average. Of course with that time you can come up with something that blows the previous game away. I think you have to give credit to Ian and Co. for at least trying to improve Madden. As for NCAA, i liked the demo, not the camera angles though. But for me, it had some real positives.

I'm just not a fan of getting all worked up one way or the other over a demo for a yearly sports title. I can see getting a sneak peak into a new shooter or action title, but you're going to gain little to no insight into a game like NCAA 10 by playing the demo.

Something like FN or even Facebreaker last year? Sure, you're basically judging big picture aspects of the game and getting a sense of what it is going to be about.

For Facebreaker last year I know a lot of folks who played the demo and were turned off by the button-mashing style of play - without the demo they might not have gotten that insight.

But for NCAA? Unless you're completely new to the game you're looking for nuiances that are likely to not be in the demo, and those nuiances that are might not carry over from the demo to the game at release.
