Time for EA's Tiger Woods to take some time off? Stuck
Posted on June 10, 2009 at 11:33 AM.
I know sales figures are probably completely contradictory to what I'm about to propose here, but the gameplay in Tiger Woods is beginning to feel a little stale to me. Don't get me wrong, it is still good, but it's not perfect by any means and I don't know if we're going to see any big leaps in it without that extra development time to get the finer points of golf pinned down.

Gameplay wise, such small things as ball physics, different swing types, even better putting mechanics, innovation in gameplay overall....they all need some extra time to pin down.

I'd also like for Tiger to take at least one year off so we can get a lot more courses and a better career mode in the game. Maybe even more PGA golfers? I'd honestly like to see both the selection of golfers and courses increase by quite a bit, but time constraints keeps each individual game from fitting it all in.

Overall, if there is a game that is suffering from being completely stale for being on a one year development cycle, it's the Tiger Woods series. I just hope EA does the right thing and releases the next iteration in a couple of years. Unfortunately, I don't think the realities of a corporate balance sheet will allow for it.

Earlier today, I spoke on IGN about the this game. I bought a Tiger, I don't remember which one, and I used to buy PGA Tour back in the day. I'm not a golfer nor do I pretend to be a big fan of golf but the gameplay seems adequate for a casual golf gamer like me. The sticking point that has kept me away from a current gen Tiger is the graphics. The graphics should be WAAAAAAYYYY better than what EA has been putting out for that franchise. Look at the rest of the franchises. The graphics are currently very good, for the most part. Why is Tiger sooo cheesy looking? They bumped up the environmentals a bit and it is noticeable but overall, blah. And the thing is, what do they really have to work on in this game?? How much space does it really take up? EA needs to get on the ball with that franchise and get the core look of it up to snuff and do the digital deal with yearly updates and such.

I agree completely. Tiger Woods is a great example of the type of game we don't need in disc form every 12 months. It's also a game that could really benefit from some renewed competition, something it really hasn't had in the console space since Links 2004 (I'm not counting games like Hot Shots as direct competition).

I don't agree TW needs time off, at least on the Wii side. They could try and add so many more options to the advanced mode to try and get an even more realistic swing motion - add balance board support to detect weight shift, with M+ add tracking swing plane, add trajectory control through where you end in your follow-through, with balance board and M+ calculate the bottom of the swing arc in relation to original ball position to properly simulate fat/thin/topped/skied/shanked shots. LOTS of potential on the Wii front I think, if they do it right!

I'm all for the part about more golfers. Problem is, the main guys I'd like to see are the ones that'll probably never be in a Tiger Woods game. Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia.

Oh well....

I use to play TW a lot but it seems so stale now. Each year it is updated less than all the other EA Sports titles.
