A Few Things Which Should be Sports Gaming Standards...
Posted on September 10, 2013 at 02:47 PM.
When I fired up NHL 14, I was greeted with a screen I found all too lovely, I was asked by a sports gaming product "What type of gameplay do you prefer?"
To me, this is the type of thing which should simply be a standard in our genre. Being able to customize your game towards an experience which is enjoyable for you should be a hallmark of great sports game design.
Why shouldn't sliders and all they can bring be utilized like this after all?
Here are a few more things I always wished sports games would have as a standard:
-Customizable difficulty. I wish it were possible to tweak how fast opponents reacted to your plays, what kind of speed boosts they receive, etc. Some games like NHL do somewhat provide this, but I'd like for every sports game to allow you to completely tweak difficulty. Put the power into fans hands, trust us!
-Gameplay Tuners. While tuning packs have become pretty commonplace, they aren't completely universal. Gameplay tuners should be more transparent as well and there should be an option in every game to choose which tuner pack you'd like to use. Power to the players!
-Ability to take your saves into next year. So you are in year 10 of your Madden Connected Franchise, that's great! Unfortunately a new Madden is coming out and you have to decide whether your player you've been playing with for several seasons is worth sticking around the current game or not for. Why do we have to make this choice? Why can't sports games allow you to take your progress with you onto the next year's game universally?
These are just three of my top 'standard' features I'd love to see in sports games. There are several other things I'd love to see sports games standardize a bit, from real to life TV broadcast presentations to integration with real sports and even sports radio to enhance the playing experience.
However, I'm just one man with one set of opinions. What are some of your ideas which should be standard in all of sports gaming?

Totally agree. Customisation is the key word for sports games going forward. I've lost count how many times I've played a game & wished there was a Slider to adjust an element of its Gameplay.

All in on Gameplay tuners.
Really wish that EA would run them like Halo runs their gravity slider. If speed thresh hold is at 100 then everyone is exactly the same speed while if it's at 0 I want a 99 ovr to look like he's using NOS.

I'm all for settings like this, but only if they make an actual difference.
I'm hard pressed to tell between Simulation, and Hardcore simulation.

ALL sports games should have a form of the VIP viewer from NBA2k series as well as user vs user stats. EA used to do this back in the day but quit. I still dont know why. They should also have autolog records like in FIFA.

I strongly agree with your 3 lists, most specially the ability to carry on your save file to the next gen series. This is SO IMPORTANT TO ME. Specially if EA will not give me the option to reduce the number of games I can play in one season. So the most season I can play in my BaGM, for example, is 3 years without Simming, then I can continue it on the next series.....THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!
