Why Can't We Get a Good Wrestling Game? Stuck
Posted on April 22, 2009 at 08:29 PM.
Seriously, I think I'm about to cry.

Why do all wrestling games insist on making themselves 'fighting' games when everyone knows that the 'sport' is a form of entertainment. Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to bash wrestling with that comment, I love wrestling.

However, the games are pretty terrible today.

Here is my initial idea to improve wrestling games: make them like wrestling. You can include a lot of the same elements as today's wrestling games, but instead of trying to win, you should work to put on more exciting matches to get the crowd into it. The better matches you put on, and the better promos you do (which I'm not sure how that'd work mind you) you'd move up the card.

Why couldn't this type of a game work? Is the WWE/TNA afraid that it'll ruin any willful suspension fans have today? If so, that has been thrown out the window already. So what do you think?

I like the idea! I am not so high on the idea of scripted endings however. In one of the first Smackdowns for the PS2 you would see a t.v. rating at the end of the match. You wanted to win but at the same time you wanted to put on a good match to get that rating up. You were able to see the whole card for that show and it gave you the ofption to watch the match or simulate. After that they went away from that but that was my favorite Smackdown.

In a carreer mode I would like to see them concentrate on letting us build a character and a persona to see if we can take them from a jobber to the next Rock or HHH type. They could do promos but give a number of options for your character to say (text based), pick the one that best fits your character. I wish they would get away from the season mode where you follow one path based on a character. It should be wide open and the more popular you get the bigger events and story lines you get into.

I think the main problem with wrestling games is the target audience. They aim to please the younger crowd and all they want to see are "big" hits and finishing moves with some tables and chairs thrown into it, and they hate losing. I think if they made a more mature wrestling game it could be an amazing game but I don't see them changing it anytime soon.

Your right.

Wrestling hasn't been the same since N64.

I think your right. Professional wrestling is a unique media. There is plenty room for creativity and innovation in wrestling video games. Thing about it is I don't think the sales rely nearly as much on licensed material in comparison to other sports gaming. I've always been interested in Fire Pro Wrestling but it never came to the U.S. on a new plat form until the PS2 was at the end of its cycle.

But a wrestling game with a mode focusing on aspects of showmanship and responding to the mood of the crowd by altering the pace/excitement of the match would sound interesting.

Chris-

I was thinking this exact same thing over the weekend for some reason.

I wish a developer would just take WCW vs NWO, Wrestlemania 2000, and WWF No Mercy for the N64, keep all those rosters, upgrade the graphics and presentation to HD, and LEAVE THE GAMEPLAY THE EXACT SAME..haha. Honestly, if my N64 didn't look terrible on my HD tv I would probably still be playing those games today.

The late 90's had the best wrestlers since the 80's, the best storylines, and hands down the best N64 games. I would literally play those games for days with my buddies- I have never played a wrestling game in the last 8+ years that has even come close to giving me the fun factor I had on my N64.

THANK YOU!!!!!! Its funny here I am a die-hard wrestling fan yet of all my games wrestling has fallen so far off that actually the weakest of the bunch.

Heck, with the way these other games are improving and taking it to a new level... its hard to see myself getting back into a wrestling game anytime soon. I'm even having to turn to UFC on May 19th.

After seeing the screens, video and hearing people talk about the UFC game THQ/YUKE'S have raised the bar. Their next Wrestling game has to match or come better.

I think it's a fantastic idea to have wrestling games focus on entertainment rather than fighting. Since it is openly admitted that it's just entertainment, why can't we play a game that focuses on trying to put on the best show in a career mode?

I'll tell you why. WWE wouldn't want it that way. They want people to have that sense that things are real, especially kids. Even though it's clear to even kids things aren't real, they don't want to spoil that illusion as a company.

It's a shame, because I think it'd be fun to play a wrestling game that focuses on putting on the best show, not beating the crap out of the opponent.

damn kids, they ruin everything. The kids (I mean the parents) are the WWE cash base and the WWE does not take unrewarding risks. The game sells well so they will not make major changes. I have to say No Mercey for the 64 was awesome but, I also liked Smackdown 2 the one cedwebb mentioned. I think there's room to have the arcade type game the kids want and the more indepth kinda game that the adults want.

I agree. . .

I've been saying this for the longest. . .
Someone should make a 'Sim' wrestling game. . .

With an engine of simular to that of Smackdown vs Raw 2006,
with the 'Move modifiers' from Legends Of Wrestling, With Euphoria engine for colisions, With The Create-A-move feature (except ability to create Submission, Top Rope, Rear Grapple,Etc.) , With a 'Create-A-Feud' feature with hundreds of different promos. . .(DLC for more promos). . for example I can go an attack another wrestler's father & choose the degree of damage I do, A DDT then a promo. . .(calling the wrestler out), Do my finish on him through a table, hospitalize him by beating him with a weapon, beating him until wrestler shows up , then run like a heel, fight like a face, poke in the eye (then hit with weapon or or perform finish) like a heel. . .then on next week's show you should have no clue how he will retaliate. And generic rosters with a stress on customization. . .is this idea to far-fetched???

Why Can't We Get a Good Wrestling Game?

The same reason why we can't get a good football game:

People keep supporting mediocre products, giving developers no financial incentive to change their business model.
