Recruiting in NCAA Football 14: The Best Yet? Stuck
Posted on July 23, 2013 at 04:08 PM.

NCAA Football 14 moved the series ahead in many ways, but perhaps the most important thing it has done was completely revamp the recruiting and offseason.

While there are some that do feel differently, I am really enjoying the new take on recruiting in NCAA Football -- so much so that I think it might be my favorite part of the new game.

Simplicity is Beauty

One of the biggest selling points of the new system versus what we have had in prior years is most of the fluff has been stripped away. No longer are you allocating time to recruits and spending hours doing it, everything is streamlined in recruiting with a point allotment given to you each week which you spend on your recruits as you see fit.

The best part, and it's a great touch, the game keeps your point totals saved from week to week so if you have a strategy in place you'd rather keep then your recruiting work week to week lessens with time.

And that isn't to say recruiting is easier, in fact I feel it's now harder than ever because you have to prioritize which recruits you really want and even then, you won't be guaranteed to get them thanks to their biases and deal breakers.

The sting of losing a recruit to another program, especially one you've poured 700 points into week after week, is tougher to swallow now more than ever.

On Field Impacts Off the Field

With points being a premium, and with your on-field results directly impacting the bonus points and thus, the perception of your program from recruits -- there's even more incentive to win and play well.

There really is a new feeling of recruiting building on your on-field performance rather than being a separate, if tedious, mini-game.

This also makes you research your recruits deeper. Beforehand, simply throwing time at recruits and pitching them on your program's best aspects was simply enough -- now that simply isn't the case.

Visit Now, Visit Later, Visit...Never?

The new importance of visits is a welcome and realistic touch. Recruits need a visit usually to commit to a program.

NCAA Football 14's visit system makes you think about when to time a visit, it makes you consider your recruits feelings towards your program and to even take a risk on an early visit hoping for an early commitment vs. a late visit and giving him many other chances to decide on other programs.

I have both lost great recruits to waiting too long to visit and lost them because I had them visit too early. I've also gotten recruits thanks to early visits, and nailed them down with a late visit. The fact a singular strategy will not work land recruits is welcome, refreshing, and important towards recruiting maintaining a vital and fun role in dynasty mode.

Lack of depth and realism?

There is some concern NCAA Football 14 replaced realism with a gamey or arcadey approach to recruiting -- but I think the opposite is true.

Just because you have more options, does not mean something is deeper, more realistic, or even better for that manner. While NCAA 14's recruiting does cut a few corners, it boasts just as much depth in recruiting strategy as the previous system when trying to allocate points as well as timing visits.

The past several years, a singular strategy of hyper targeting players and their favored pitches meant landing recruits you wanted more often than not. This year, while you can do that -- it will come at the expense of a deeper recruiting class.

Even with hyper targeting and max bidding...you are going to get outbid on some players, some are going to commit to a school they simply like more and there's nothing you can do about a recruits existing biases.

And if you ask me, that's plenty realistic enough.

Your second point about bonus points and on field performance is key. That aspect of the new recruiting engine has me most stoked. I'm currently in an online dynasty with a 3-star team and recruiting the #1 rated TE in the country. My current TE is a senior and I know if I'm going to get that #1 recruit I need to pass often to my current TE.

The new recruiting is garbage. i enjoyed spending time before, much more rewarding if you landed the recruit.

I like this new system way more.

I don't hate the new recruiting, but I agree with Feldman in that it isn't as rewarding.

I love everything about it. The phone calls were tedious and didn't reflect any realism (from the mouths of actual college coaches and recruiters). At the core, the point system was something I enjoyed going back to the PS2 days. However, recruiting is so much more intricate than simply assigning points. On top of that, I don't have time to do the phone-call style recruiting. For someone who wants to get on with the game, the efficiency and depth of this year's setup is something the team at EA should build on as a gold standard.

I'm shocked how similar this sounds to the NCAA 06 game that I play to this day.

NCAA 06 -
On field performance matters - Check
Allocating points to recruits - Check
Timing visits correctly to get recruits to sign - Check

This is the first explanation of the new recruiting system that I've understood.
All this is great.. Basically what you're saying is that recruiting points act as cash essentially. The more you earn, the better you will do.
1 One suggested improvement..It should be easier to garner points if you're Alabama than South Alabama, just due to reputation.. Maybe it does work that way, I don't know. But that's the one thing missing if I read correctly.

I'll have to disagree, seems like there's no logic to a recruit locking me out. I've had 2 recruits randomly lock me out even though I was ahead of the other teams by thousands of points.

Jimbo614. That is the case. For new coaches you start with 5000 per week, you can eventually build your tree and unlock more to work with from week to week, but you also get bonus points for what you do on the field and your school's Rep. These aren't allocated but instead are automatically applied to every recruit you actually target.

They will vary from position to position and recruit to recruit (because bonus points are also given for proximity, if that is a main point for the recruit, and then you get bonus points for being in a pipeline state. Alabama garners a lot more attention than South Alabama when recruiting, Just because the amount of points you have to spend stays fixed (for the most part) does not mean you have the same chance at landing a kid as Nick Saban does.

The old system was better in that you were more immersed in recruiting. This new system is not nearly as in depth. You just put points that everyone else can put in and hope that is enough. I like the addition of the in game performances impacting recruits but the point system is not as immersive as the phone calls of the last system. You actually had to find out what the recruits cared about and could sway their opinion of certain features that made your program seem like a better fit. This year is about putting 500 points in the category all year and hoping thats enough. Next years game needs to go back to the old system with the in game bonuses added to it.
