NCAA Football 14: Picking a Dynasty Team - Big 12
Posted on July 8, 2013 at 11:20 AM.

Reason #1 to play in the Big XII: Beating Texas.

The Big XII is a different sort of animal these days.

The heyday of the first 'superconference' with the best of the old SWC combined with the old Big 8 is now over, with what remains being a hodgepodge of schools with a common interest of trying to make a bit of cash.

Most believe the Big XII is still one of the best football conferences in the land, with 90% of the conference making a bowl last year, there was certainly enough depth to the conference to make it tough on anyone.

This year though, the conference is in reset mode, with several programs breaking in new offenses and one (Texas Tech) breaking in a new coach entirely.

In NCAA Football 14, you'll be playing in a conference full of highly rated offenses and decent defenses -- so expect a lot of scoring early and often.

Baylor Bears
Offense: Spread (HB, 4 WR)
Defense: 4-2-5

(+) The offense is on track with plenty of talent all around, with RB Seastrunk being a key cog in the attack.
(+) Defense is improving, with one of the top defenses by rating in the conference.
(-) Bryce Petty is good at QB, but you'll need to excuse the receivers a bit.
(-) Defense is good, but the line is young. A pass rush will be difficult to build early on.

Iowa State Cyclones
Offense: Spread (HB, 3 WR, TE)
Defense: 4-3

(+) A good building project as a lot of talent is being replaced all over the field.
(+) Run defense is still pretty tough.
(-) Talent level is the lowest tied with Kansas in the conference.
(-) Expectations at Iowa State are fickle, with a dearth of talent but with recent success in making it to Bowls. Higher difficulties could challenge you.

Kansas Jayhawks
Offense: Pro Spread (2 Backs, 2 WR, TE)
Defense: 3-4

(+) Super low expectations out of the gate, no conference wins since 2010.
(+) Decent offensive talent with QB Jake Heaps and RB James Sims being good stones to build on.
(-) Defense is atrociously bad for the Big XII, which will make winning games against so many high powered offenses tough.
(-) Team is very young, especially on defense which will mean the first couple of years could be tough.

Kansas State Wildcats
Offense: Pro Spread (HB, 3 WR, TE)
Defense: 4-3

(+) Good and solid talent levels, with a 91 rated offense behind a great rushing attack. Jake Waters is capable.
(+) Your defensive line is pretty solid, with a pair of talented seniors up front helping lead the charge.
(-) Defense is rebuilding, with an 83 overall rating you'll need to get creative to keep high octane Big XII offenses from going crazy on you.
(-) This isn't the same team as last year and will need a season or two to build back into a National Contender if you are playing a tougher difficulty.

Oklahoma Sooners
Offense: Pro Spread (HB, 3 WR, TE)
Defense: 4-2-5

(+) Blake Bell and the rest of the offense is just sickeningly good. There's talent everywhere.
(+) You have so much depth on offense that you could field the second team and still be competitive.
(-) Defense is good, but you have to watch for secondary breakdowns.
(-) While Blake Bell is good in game, he can still be inconsistent.

Oklahoma State Cowboys
Offense: Spread (HB, 4 WR)
Defense: 4-3

(+) Top to bottom, the second best team in the conference in NCAA 14.
(+) Offense is explosive with weapons everywhere, you will have no problem scoring points.
(-) Defense is loaded this year talent wise, but it's also old -- you'll be replacing a lot of starters in year two.
(-) That same problem also goes for the offense. Year two will be a rebuilding year in the truest sense.

TCU Horned Frogs
Offense: Multiple (HB, 3 WR, TE)
Defense: 4-2-5

(+) Pachall is a really good QB. Rest of offense is young and will grow with your program.
(+) Defense has a lot of young talent, you'll be really good in a couple of years with smart recruiting.
(-) Game severely underrates TCU's overall talent, especially on defense.
(-) Offense isn't as high powered as the rest of the conference, and your defense will have issues against Big XII offenses initially.

Texas Longhorns
Offense: Spread (HB, 3 WR, TE)
Defense: 4-3

(+) Talent wise, the best Big 12 team in the game. Every aspect of this team oozes quality.
(+) While inconsistent in real-life, David Ash is a force in the game and you should keep him for two seasons. You can compete year after year.
(-) You do have a lot of experience starting in the first two years, but will need to recruit wisely to succeed in years three and beyond.
(-) Expectations at Texas are sky high, so you have to be ready to win and win now.

Texas Tech Red Raiders
Offense: Spread (HB, 4 WR)
Defense: 3-4

(+) You have a very solid receiving corps to take advantage of in the spread attack.
(+) Offense has a lot of talent overall, with a highly competitive 90 overall rating in the game.
(-) Defense is lacking in almost every area talent wise and keeping up with the rest of the conference on the scoreboard will be challenging.
(-) Your defense is also older -- which means you'll be replacing that talent with even less talent (sans brilliant recruiting) in year two and three.

West Virginia Mountaineers
Offense: Spread (2 Backs, 3 WR)
Defense: 3-4

(+) Defense catches a huge break, with an 87 overall rating which is not indicative of how bad it really was last year.
(+) Team is very young, which means you can compete with time.
(-) One of the lowest overall ratings in the conference, replacing a ton of weapons off of the offense which was supposed to bolster a NC run last year.
(-) Defense, while overrated in the game -- is still lagging behind the best in the conference at a program which expects you to win early and often.

Which Big 12 program would be your choice for Dynasty mode in NCAA Football 14?
