NBA Live Going With the Humble Approach Stuck
Posted on June 21, 2013 at 10:27 AM.

Call me a sucker for enjoying a company take on a tone of humbleness and passion -- but the tone Sean O'Brien had struck me as a great response to the series' past and to give hope for NBA LIve's future.

It's too early to declare Live will be anything near good, much less great -- but we've heard several times how O'Brien was extremely skeptical of EA's basketball plans before jumping aboard:

Quote:
"First off, the move from Vancouver, Canada to Orlando, Florida was a big one for me and my family. That's a long way to go and I needed to be sure that EA SPORTS was committed to the NBA business for the long haul. As I would have to give up a lot both personally and professionally to make this work, so I wanted to make sure that I was going to have a chance to be successful if I did take on this challenge. The great news for me is that EA SPORTS is 100% committed to rebuilding NBA LIVE and growing it's basketball business overall."

Our experience of NBA Live thus far has been in-engine game renders and a dribbling exhibition at E3. In that sense, we really know nothing about how the game is shaping up. What we do know is that we are getting something which has become a rare occurrence in sports video games nowadays: real direct-sport competition.

It will be interesting to see how EA's approach to basketball differs from the heavyweight champion hailing from California, NBA 2K.

We are hoping to get our first full glimpses of NBA Live later this summer. I'm not expecting a miracle right out of the gate, but a solid effort isn't too much to ask for. The tone coming out of EA about Live right now would tend to indicate they feel they have a workable and solid game coming -- anything short of that will be the end of NBA Live's credibility amongst many consumers.

I think I could get with two basketball sims on the market, even though 2k has done such a bang up job with its bball title. Sort of the opposite of what Madden has done with its exclusive title. Especially starting fresh on a brand new console. What would be great is if they would let up their stranglehold on football, but I guess like you chris Ima dreamer for the good ole days.....

I expect, at the very least, a solid effort with great foundation and something to lokk forward to for Live 15.

I havent liked an EA basketball game since Live 99. Unfortunately, this means that Im not expecting EA to deliver at all. Hopefully they'll surprise me with a good game that 1 or 2 years away from being a great NBA game. I like that they have a bunch of new engines and more powerful hardware to design for.
Even though Im getting a PS4 first I wish more that EA was developing a new baseball as well. One that could take advantage of the new engine cause I would like to see better player collisions and wall collisions. Maybe The Show is ready to produce that for the Show 14 on PS4.
