Cheesers, Cheaters, Etc. Etc. Etc. Stuck
Posted on April 2, 2009 at 10:01 AM.
Picture this.

You are locked into a tight battle with an opponent online in a sports game (we're being vague here on purpose to not name names) when suddenly he decides to pull out the cheese or start exploiting a glitch. The game ends in a blowout.

The end result of this unfortunate encounter is a busted up controller from you as well as your dog hiding underneath the bed because of the expletives you have just filled the room with.

Maybe your results aren't as extreme, as I honestly haven't ever gotten that mad about a sports video game. However, I certainly believe cheesers and cheaters online are one of the biggest problems for game developers moving forward.

So, in your opinion, how big is the problem of 'online cheating' and/or 'cheesing' to the future of sports games? An even better question if you don't think so...how much do you play online? Let's hear it!

I go in blindly thinking that people will play fair and I will have a few good sim games whenever I get to play online. But atleast 3 out of 4 people are cheesers and cheaters.

I just played a game of NBA 2k8 online the other day and I got blown out 94 -34. I never quit playing though because I feel that it is poor sportsmanship. Tp those other players out there that see your rank if you quit alot will not even consider playing against you.

What's the point anyways? That is why you find a group of friends that you can play in a league with online so you can limit the cheeseballs being thrown at you.

MMChrisS,

No, I don't have fanboyitis. I like EA more than 2K because of their broader range of sports games. But, for a company as big as EA, there seems to be a lot more of cheese-rewarding glitches in EA Sports games than any other major developer.

And I have yet to find cheese in MLB 09: The Show.

Cheesing is very tough to handle. It isn't as cut and dry as it appears at first. Claiming "cheese" is over used so often. It is to the eye of the beholder and THAT is what makes it so difficult. To gauge the problem within the context it occurs just gets complicated quick.

Simple example - in my All Pro Football 2k8 leagues we ban "quick snapping". This is where someone who snaps the ball as fast as possible when their QB is coming to the line. It makes defensive adjustments very difficult to do and often leaves your manually controlled defender falling at the snap of the ball because you were flicking the tackle stick to make an adjustment pre-snap. Now, does it break any football laws? nope. There's some real gray area which leads to arguments. Remember that TD Peyton Manning threw last season where he snapped the ball before the defense got set? It happens! Just an example of how difficult this topic gets....

I only play online games. I think many people point fingers when they lose and immediately write their loss off as "cheese". I've had people call me cheese and I play strictly by a freaking 5 page rulebook! People see what they want to see. Losers will rarely be happy, and you know what? In a game there must be a winner and loser so someone is probably leaving angry.

This also brings up the difficulty of taking many points of view seriously. This subject must remain extremely objective to get anywhere. Many times I've lost and just been furious, but with logic in mind I realize I got outplayed, I didn't get "cheesed" because some guy ran the same play 5 times... it's because I left it open so easy.

Obviously cheese exists - FG glitches, freezing games. These kinds of things should be banned outright by the game's server when detected repeatedly. Those are game ruining and indisputable. I think many people just call getting their butt whooped "cheese" too often.

Cheese is only when someone exploits a glitch or cheat in the programing. I have been accused of cheese by going for it on 4th and 4 on the opp. 45 before when I was down by 10 points. How the heck is that cheese? If I pass the ball 45 out of 50 plays and mix up the play call how is that cheese? My combined online record is now a whopping 5-14 or so and I'm being accused of cheese! I think that the term "cheese" is way over used.

When somebody says "that's why I don't play online" I think they just don't like competition. Anybody who has friends that play the same games online automatically has someone that they can play and there's a good likelihood that they will get a straight game there. If not, there are leagues all over OS with people dedicated to straight play. Is it an issue? Yeah, it stops me (for the most part) from logging on and playing random people. But why in the world would I want to do that? Unless I was trying to rank up, for example...
