Editors Mailbag - February 15, 2013 Edition Stuck

College basketball is on the mind of many OS'ers right now.

It's been a busy week here at Operation Sports, with Yukes and 2K being revealed to be business partners and with more info leaking out about some big releases in the first half of the year. We know a lot more about Grid 2, and we know more about The Show coming up this year as well.

We're starting a new Friday tradition at Operation Sports, taking your questions via Twitter on Friday and then answering them Friday afternoon!

So with that said, let's get to some of your questions for the week!

@CM_Puma: With Take Two takin over the WWE games franchise, do you think the WWE games will be updated as much as say NBA2K?

Chris: Yukes is going to keep developing the game -- so I think in a lot of ways you'll get a game that's incredibly familiar. 2K does do a good job with presentation traditionally, so I wouldn't be shocked to find out WWE '14 hits store shelves with an all new and much improved presentation. I think gameplay and such will be a progression from where we are now. Don't expect the wheel to be reinvented with the WWE franchise going forward, more than likely you'll see a continued progression forward with the franchise.

@JLMattick54: College hoops are heating up. What's the chances we get 2k college hoops after licensing rights expire?

Chris: As far as I know, no one owns any licenses to college hoops at this time. EA did buy exclusive rights for a bit, but that's only because 2K quit developing College Hoops to begin with due to poor sales. Right now, with the Ed O'Bannon lawsuit out there, and with the traditionally poor sales of college basketball games the more important question is: is any publisher going to get a college basketball game to market anytime soon? As the years go on and demand continues to be pretty small, the answer keeps getting further and further away from yes.

Sam Wallace (via e-mail): Can we expect any new features with NCAA's dynasty mode this year, kind of like a connected careers mode?

Chris:
Right now, I don't think you are going to see NCAA get a connected careers type of treatment. The simple fact is, Online Dynasty does extremely well and there isn't much of a demand for that sort of thing with NCAA. What NCAA needs, and I've pointed this out on my blog before, is a streamlined dynasty experience that clearly defines you as the coach of your program. Right now you're in some sort of a middle ground and I don't think it does anyone any good where Dynasty is right now.

@MBellingtier: Any reason EA couldn't turn the servers back on for NCAA 10 B-Ball? Legal issues or cost a factor?

Chris: It's a cost thing, as it almost always is. The amount of people playing the game online just didn't justify the expense of keeping servers dedicated to the game. EA cites that less than 1% of all the players online are players of the older games when they cancel server support, and maintaining support for those players isn't cost effective. Thus, you simply end up in a bad situation all around for players who want to keep playing older non-replaced titles like NCAA Basketball.

I long for a college hoops game with the 2K engine. I would be fine with them releasing a game every few years if thats what it takes.

If they were to make another college basketball game I would pre-order the first day they started making pre-orders. Someone needs to make a new one, preferably 2k

A college basketball game is sorely missing year to year.

Poor sales??? Who doesn't like college hoops? It's a lot of suffering out here lol

Most people don't realize just how poorly college basketball games sell.

Let me put it in perspective.

College Hoops 2K8 for Xbox 360 has sold 158,000 copies globally since it was released over five years ago.

NBA 2k13 for Xbox 360 sold 460,000 copies in the FIRST WEEK it was on sale.

Think about that. NBA 2K13 sold almost THREE TIMES as many copies in one week as College Hoops 2K8 sold in FIVE YEARS.

THAT is the market difference between pro and college hoops games.

Its unfair to compare a game from 2007 to the the 3rd installment of NBA 2K's dominant presence. It would be unfair to compare it to NBA 2K10 (even though that was the first year when NBA 2K became one of the gold standards for sports video games).

The only fair comparison is to match NBA 2K8 against CH 2K8.

The only numbers I could find were from early on in the release, but it was at 116,000 for the 360. Based on that its easy to project that it outsold its college counterpart but the numbers aren't nearly as staggering as they are if you compare a game early on in the current gen to one of the best games of this generation in terms of sports.

As stated above you can't compare nba 2k13 with CH2k8. First of all they came out in different years. Secondly nba 2k13 is the only basketball game out there to play. When CH2k8 came out there were 4 basketball games, (nba 2k, ch 2k, nba live, ncaa bb) if im not mistaken.

I've been waiting for a new college hoops since 2008.I still play CH2k8 on 360, and have a used copy of CH2k8 for ps3 if someone wants to buy it off me.

Gosh I hate that word "Cost effective". Its like this, Stop charging 60 bucks for this game, charge $39.99 and folks will buy it. You have a Call of duty game that probably cost close to 40 million to make with alot of people working on the game. You have a hoops title that may cost close to 10 mill. ( Im just throwing numbers out for examples) Call of Duty Is the Lamborghini of Videogames, College hoops is the Ford Focus of videogames. Why would you charge the same stinking price? Ill take the lambo for the same price over a Focus 100 out of 100 times.

I still play College Hoops 2k8 but, man, I really want new one. I feel like it would sell better than last time. All we can hope for is that one day 2k picks up the license for this... and football.
