UPDATE: SCAM - New NCAA Football Game promises 689 teams, needs your support Stuck
Posted on February 6, 2013 at 12:45 PM.

Are you unhappy with college football gaming's status quo?

Well time to put your money where you mouth is, at least that's the hope of a relatively unknown developer in Dirty Bird Sports who just launched a $500,000 Kickstarter campaign to fund a new NCAA Football game that proposes it will feature all 689 teams from Division I all the way to NAIA for the XBox 360 and PS3.

You read that right.

Dirty Bird Sports and Jam Entertainment both promise to insert the deepest legacy mode game 'of all time' with promises of deep recruiting, sanctions, and more.

Right now all the game has to show are some renders which first appeared in 2011 on Turbosquid. It's possible the renders were bought with the intention of using them in the game -- it's also possible the developer currently hasn't done anything with the game at this time and everyone is being duped. We're going to be reaching out soon for an interview to get necessary information about where the game is currently at in development and where it's going, along with any details on licensing, etc.

It should be exciting to see where this as of yet unnamed NCAA Football game goes (if anywhere, if it's legit at all), and you can bet we will be covering it on Operation Sports through it's development cycle if it actually, you know ever gets off the ground.

What do you guys think? Will you be supporting this game's Kickstarter?

UPDATE: It's a SCAM.

This is the response I got from the project creator about licensing and the screenshots on the page via a direct message on Kickstarter:

Quote:
CM,

Due to the current NCAA License, the earliest we can obtain the license is next year, at which point we plan to obtain. The game however, is in progress as we speak.

Our team consist of former employees from major companies as well as some independent game companies.

We expect our game to release June of 2015. The backers rewards are listed accordingly within each pledge amount, respectively.

As far as Trademark concerns go, we will be using some of the screenshots on turbo squid provided by those creators. These were used simply an an example and are subject to change based on our game engine.

Shall you decide to pledge or not is your decision.

We thank you for considering us and wish you a great day.

DBS Staff.
My tl;dr interpretation of the above - this company has nothing to convince potential backers that they should back the project within the 58-day timespan.

There's no evidence of original work whatsoever to this point, there's no reason to believe that this game exists. Compare it to every other video game Kickstarter page; there are videos of real people talking to the potential backer, alpha gameplay videos, design documents, extensive FAQs, in some cases name-dropping (the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter comes to mind, name-dropping Tim Schafer) and so on. None of that exists here. Money isn't given away on wishes, and Kickstarter isn't a charity.

Again, I was too reactionary before; there's a chance that this project could be legitimate. There are plenty of reasons to believe it is not. If this project is legitimate, then the creator should close the Kickstarter and re-open it only when he has made significant progress so that there is reason to believe the project exists and has a reasonable chance at completion; i.e. a potential backer can pledge money with confidence. If the project is not legitimate, then the creator has done a very poor job of attempting to hide that fact; I discovered the models on TurboSquid with five minutes of Google image searching. Either way, I will not back this project and I recommend others avoid it as well.

Even if you pledge, there's really no risk. The way kickstarter works is, if they don't get the pledge amount they want, you won't be charged. They want 500,000. If they don't get that, you don't lose a penny, the only way you "lose" money is if they get over 500,000 dollars in pledges. If they get under that, you won't be charged. It does seem great, but as mentioned above, I'd like to know its a for sure legitimate oppourtunity.

That's not exactly the same as their "All images are taken from game" proclamation on their Kickstarter page. Good luck to them, but I'm keeping my money.

I'll believe it when I see it, meaning when the game is done. Although to have a game that deep would be awesome.

It'd be really cool, and if it actually happens I might purchase it if it's reasonably priced. However, I'm still on the "I'll believe it when I see it" boat.

I believe it says on the kickstarter that it would be $34.99 retail when and if they get it out.

I'm kind of disappointed at the lack of enthusiasm by OS. I get that you need to be careful about who you give money to, but at this point, I'm all for donating quite a bit to a team to bring something else to the table. They way kickstarter works like some one else said, is that if it doesn't reach it's goals, you don't get charged. That sounds like a win-win scenario. If you put faith into them others could follow and in return we could have a game that is worth playing. Where's the downside? What's wrong with making the NCAA team sweat? This might be what gets 2k to get involved. You never know and if OS of all places shoots this idea down, then I don't want to hear about lack of innovation. I've read so much on how the NCAA series is stale, but yet when a brand new project with brand new developers comes into to town, everyone kind of shrugs their shoulders and crosses their arms.
When I read the title I was expecting over 300 people to comment. At least.

I'm all for this project and will put my money where my mouth is. I'm willing to donate and help the cause. I want just a tad more info on the project, but after that I'm all in.

We want innovation here on OS (at least I thought) so why not support them?!

These are not meant to be fighting words to people who have already said they don't want to back it (CM I'm not attacking you), because I know we are all on the same team here, but am I the only one thinking that this is odd everyone hasn't jumped in?

Chris? How do you feel about OS's reaction so far?

# 23 cusefan74 @ Feb 6
It's hard to jump into something that sounds to good to be true.

# 24 SkillzKillz719 @ Feb 6
But if everyone felt that cusefan, then it would never happen. At this point, it is worth the investment into something that would at least cause SOME sort of stir up in the stale NCAA market right now...

I have backed several Kickstarter projects that were successful so Kickstarter is legit. This particular Kickstarter campaign looks poorly run. Also, NO PC version which which means I would not back it anyway. The moment someone takes a PC football game to Kickstarter I am in big, as long as the campaign and research check out.

The PC market is one that is plagued with pirates. A game for the PC is set up the fail the way things are now..

No offense taken, foremost.

I doubt EA Sports will ever even acknowledge the existence of this game, assuming it ever sees the light of day. It's not a commercial threat to their product at this time. This won't get 2K Sports involved either; if they wanted to make a football game, they have their own engines and means with which to do so.

The reason I'm suspicious is because there's no evidence a development team even exists. There's literally nothing revealed for this project which was produced by this person or team. If whoever it is needs time to produce content, fine, but that person / team should produce something - anything - and then come back to Kickstarter requesting funds with some sort of proof-of-concept material in hand. The converse of that - ask for money, then produce content - is not how successful Kickstarters are funded. Again, I've been through the Kickstarter process and my company did extensive research on successful Kickstarter video game projects prior to attempting one. Even then, ours failed, and I already listed a few reasons as to why we fell short.

It's not about lack of desire for an alternative take on football video game for me, it's about the validity of the alternative being presented.

It will be Hard, but they can do it

# 29 cusefan74 @ Feb 6
It's not worth it for me. I'm with JerseySuave here, I need to see something more before giving money to something. I'll give my money when I see the game.

Im really hoping this is legit. Im just kind of worried to donate...
