What is up with that? Full Stadiums Edition Stuck
Posted on March 18, 2009 at 04:19 PM.
I want to start a new series on my blog where I will pose a simple question: What is up with that? The question will deal with some kind of a common issue in sports games that bugs the heck out of me that could be easily remedied to have a much more dramatic effect in realism.

My first issue?

What's up with stadiums always being filled to capacity in most next-gen sports games? Why can't we have realistic dynamic attendance?

It bugs me, I really want to know why the Houston Cougars have a full stadium when they are playing UL Monroe in the middle of a rainstorm in September. Why do the Sacramento Kings play to a full house every night? Why are there people actually in the stands for a Marlins game? Does this bug anyone else as much as it does me?

Dynamic attendance was a great feature in College Hoops 2K8.

I wonder, what other games have included it as a feature? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

But it's definitely rewarding to have to earn and maintain a fan base instead of being automatically given a sellout every time you take the court.

Apparently the NBA doesn't want to show empty seats in their games, hence why NBA 2K-series hasn't done it in 4 years. It's a shame, because it can actually be used strategically, like where your role in the Association is to raise attendance or whatever. Memphis actually has the lowest draw percentage, where they only fill 69.3% of their stadium. The Kings fill 71.2%. The Mavericks fill 104.3% of theirs.

I really hope that, if it is true that the NBA restricts dynamic attendance, that they man up and let the games put it in.

Dolphin Stadium in MLB 09 is pretty realistic in their attendance. Most of the stadiums are good, from what I can tell. Still, NBA games are the worst. They make every game seem like the NBA Playoffs, but that is too unrealistic.

Yet another area where The Show shines. This feature makes the big games feel bigger when its a full house.

I love the system in MLB 09: The Show for PS3. Always playing to a full house probably goes over well with the leagues, but it hurts the product.

I remember a Madden game on the PS2 had it, but they over did it. There were tons of empty seats in Green Bay and they were 5-5 or something. Some stadiums shouldn't be affected by it.
