My Top Five Offensive Formations in NCAA Football 13 Stuck
Posted on November 27, 2012 at 01:30 PM.

One of the best parts of NCAA Football 13 is easily the playbooks and the unique formations you'll encounter -- because when you have over 100 different teams, you are bound to encounter some unique offenses and formations in football.

My favorite formations in NCAA Football 13 are in no way a gauge of their effectiveness, but rather in my personal preference to run them. There are a lot of great formations and each varies in their effectiveness. However, one thing is definitely true: everyone's got an opinion on this one. So after I'm done sharing my list, I want you all to share yours!

5. Empty backfield, 5WR Shotgun

This one is a simple and straightforward formation. With a scrambling QB with a big arm (a-la a Vince Young type), it can be downright deadly. The biggest reason I like it though is because you can put your five best receivers from any formation in and you are guaranteed to have a potent attack if you vary your playcalling. It would be cool if NCAA had better run options though. I'd love to be able to put a HB in the slot and run a bunch of draws and whatnot out of this formation. Makes too much sense.

4. Maryland I

How cool is this formation? You line up three running backs in a line behind the QB. If you have two dynamic and big blocking FBs, this is an unstoppable goal-line formation if you run an iso out of it. Plus, it hearkens back to a simpler time of football, when the forward pass was just a twinkle in Teddy Roosevelt's eye. Strange fact: President Roosevelt actually lobbied to have the forward pass legalized in football in 1906.

3. Diamond

I'm sticking with the slang term for this formation, which puts two running backs beside the QB and one RB behind the QB. This formation is one of my favorites because it's like a modern day version of the Wishbone, and it was made popular by both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State a few years ago. With a talented stable of running backs, it makes for an incredibly impressive running attack, and the passing options are very good out of this formation. The wide outs can run bigger routes to stretch the defense while running backs give you good dump-off options or even man in motion slot receiver type of options.

2. I-Formation

What in the world? Yes, I know -- there is really not that much that can be said about the I-formation. It's plain, it's vanilla. It's like the safe option you had for a prom date. You know what you are getting, you just aren't all that excited about it. But in terms of a traditional football formation to put as many of your pieces on the field as possible, you can't beat this. Two wide receivers, a tailback, a fullback and a tight end give you all the options you'll ever need. For an offensive play caller with some imagination and talent everywhere, it's hard to find another formation that can do it all better than the I.

1. Wishbone

Two things. I'm from Oklahoma and I grew up on stories of the magical wishbone - so what did you expect? The go-to offense of the 70s and 80s for many offensive powerhouses is still one of my favorite formations to run with in the game. It's hard to beat the feeling of running the triple option with a good and talented scrambling QB. I have been known to start dynasties at schools with talented scramblers just to run a wishbone offense from the get-go. Call it the novelty factor -- I prefer to call it my favorite formation.

Sound off: What are your favorite formations in NCAA Football 13?

If you had Marcus Dupree you would switch from the Wishbone and the I-Formation would be your #1

I also like running the wishbone and also the pistol, both good for running of course

I like I-Formation Strong Close for running.

4WR Spread Flex has ALWAYS been one of my favorites.

Gotta love the wildcat everyone once in a while as well.

My Top 4...

i-formation- best way to start up your run game in quarter 1 and pound the defense at the end of the game to close a win. Weak db's get exposed on the curl routes and the play action streak play is like desert after a good meal of pound rock. Hit the 3 or 4 hole and get that rb lathered up son!!!

*4wr spread- You almost feel like Peyton Manning during his wonder years in Indy if you know how to "no huddle" this formation to include audibles, hot routes, and change block schemes with your backs. Poetry in motion!

*weak side- Straight wild card formation: it looks like strong close run play to the defense, but you can run weak side, play action, or eat defenses with your tight end on cross or fly routes.

*ace formations- Pick your poison ladies... runs, slants, curls, sluggos, crosses, and wr/te screens. This has been a sleeper formation for years. You can run out of this base formation with its options and never run the same play twice.

...great topic MM

Maryland I was a staple on PS2 games and still run the bone. Would run even more wishbone if they had a little more passing options.

For the most part, I like formations that are a little more balanced and where its easy to flip a running play to the other side when the defense lines up a certain way.
