Does The Show Get Overlooked Because of it's Release Date? Stuck
Posted on October 19, 2012 at 12:22 PM.

Not unlike how great hitters in the 90s and early 2000s will be overlooked because of the steroids era, the flagship video games title of baseball is suffering a similar type of fate of bad timing.

MLB '12: The Show is probably among the top three, no it is among the top three titles released each and every year in sports gaming from a quality standpoint. The amount of depth and immersiveness within the game is right up there with every other sports game on the market from FIFA to NBA 2K.

But yet, MLB 12: The Show is often mentioned as an afterthought for sports game of the year behind closed doors here at OS and also among users within the community.

So let me make the case for why The Show is deserving of the award this year, a couple of months before we vote on it:

The new ball physics took the game to a new level fundamentally. This was the biggest new touch of this year's edition to me and many others. There are some wonky moments, but that's to be expected. The gem is that the accurate spin and deceleration of the ball produces even more types of hits, better bounces and deflections, and other various enhancements. It was a behind the scenes type of change, but it's one that has to be seen to be fully appreciated.

The new controls were a nice added touch. Pulse pitching is a mixed bag for peeps, I liked the change of pace personally. Zone analog batting was another new touch, not too unlike Pro Yakkyu Spirits' approach to hitting.

The Presentation is still quite good, although the commentary for vets is a bit stale. The little things within the game are a famous touch of the franchise, and while the commentary has truly begun to become a bit stale (we have new hope with at least one new face in the booth this year), there aren't many games in the same league as The Show when it comes to presentation. TruBroadcast Presentations were a nice addition this year as well, which added a whole new level of immersion to the game.

The game is highly customizable, there are sliders for everything. Seriously, whatever type of game of hardball you want to play, The Show theoretically makes it quite possible. It's hard to beat that type of customization. NBA 2K13 gets hailed often for it's sliders, The Show deserves equal praise.

Above all other things, the Franchise Mode is one of the deepest in sports games. I've often complained about the Franchise Mode menus, and I've given the game some knocks in the past because of it when I reviewed it -- but I can truly and honestly say The Show's franchise mode is probably the deepest of all sports gaming. No other game really captures the nuances quite like The Show's franchise mode does. This is both a benefit and a detriment. The franchise mode is so deep, the menu's really do get quite convoluted and confusing to do some pretty nuanced actions.

Will MLB 12: The Show win the Sports game of the year award in 2012?

I'm not sure. My advocacy only can go so far as there are a lot of people who vote on it to prevent this very type of strongman approach. But I know that when it comes time to cast my ballot in December, I'm going to remember to not forget The Show.

Being the oldest of the major releases each year it faces a distinct disadvantage -- a victim of timing.

But unlike those in the steroids era, The Show doesn't cheat for success, it does it the old fashioned way. Great pitching, timely hitting, and a flair for getting things right when it needs to.

In this campaign season, I say vote MLB 12: The Show -- it's the most reliable franchise on the market today.

I'm with thevaliantx on this one. It's a shame that the schedule bug ruined this game for so many since it was shaping up to be another great year. If it weren't for that bug I'd put it behind NBA2k13 and FIFA but because of the glitch...well, even with the glitch I'd still put it ahead of Madden and NCAA so yeah, #3 isn't bad. I think overall that's about where it'll land since as good as it is at this point NBA and FIFA just do their thing better.

The show and 2k13 is it. Soccer is gay, hockey cancelled, n madden is consistant. It consistantly sucks year in n year out. The show goty imo, but 2k13 is right there.

Halo, Gears of War, God of War. Being in one console doesn't hurt those games. Again, the fact that it is baseball is the biggest detriment.

The Show is routinely the best sports game released year after year. Unfortunately, for the reasons already described by others, it often gets overlooked in the GOTY discussion. It's released early in the year, it's only on PS3, and baseball is definitely behind football, basketball, and soccer in terms of video game popularity world wide. I love playing baseball video games personally (especially The Show) but I know many people who find baseball video games boring. Due to the nature of the sport there's no getting around the early release date every year that baseball games bring but The Show could gain exposure if it somehow was ported to the 360 and/or PC. It'll never happen because it's a SCEA game, but that's the only way I ever see The Show being able to compete popularity wise with the other yearly sports games.

Overlooked by who?

Sure, a typical gamer might forget how great The Show was if you ask them while they're knee deep in NBA 2K or FIFA. But someone casting a meaningful vote should do their homework.

I actually think The Show would have an advantage. All of its patches would be in, rosters would be up to date, etc. You could still be waiting for those things from NBA 2K & FIFA come voting time.

And if the popularity of the sport is affecting opinions of the game, maybe the voting process should change. Of course the perception of the game will suffer if someone that enjoys basketball & soccer that much more than baseball is comparing those games.

It's a good point but I would definitely disagree about the sliders being good. The game only uses a simple 10 point system which doesn't allow for enough customization in things like pitch speed. The game also has some global sliders instead of cpu/human sliders for fielding which doesn't make sense to me. Lastly, the game really needs a cpu aggressiveness slider to determine how often the cpu swings at pitches out of the zone. There are too many things lumped in with the contact slider imo.

If it would be on xbox too, that would be the only way how they would get a GOTY..

Wait, everyone is saying it doesn't win sports game of the year because it is exclusive to the PS3 and thus it doesn't get played by more people. But gamers don't pick the GOTY games, the media, magazines, and reviewers do... right? I don;t know, I have read reviews for every The Show entry and one thing that every reviewer seems to say is that the game is good, but it's not much different than last year. On average The Show usually scores in the 8.0 - 8.9 range.

I think this is why it doesn't win more awards. But this year might be different because the game was pretty exceptional this year. *shrugs*

Wrong usage of "its."

i think it is also a generation thing too. i am old enough to appreciate baseball. it was my first sports love till 80's football and basketball grabbed me by my balls. since then i resent the nba and nfl but i found the show. it reminded me how great the game of baseball is and will always be.

nfl and nba are full of drama queens, from the top level executives to the players and to the fans (generally speaking). baseball on the other hand is dramatic. every year bottom of the barrel teams rise up, new stars are born, and something epic is achieved. baseball just keeps getting better and better every year.

Apparently, you're the only one that feels this way because the sport of baseball has a rapidly declining fan base.

But The Show is the best sports game of the year...It's also the MOST CONSISTENT from year to year by far.

A few have already made great points. The two BIG reason's it's ignored.

1) PS3 Exclusive
2) Baseball titles don't sell as much as other sports titles.

Those two reasons are why it get's ignored. To be honest, I like that it's ignored. It gives the dev team a chip on their shoulder to keep making the game better. Look at the other sports titles when they got Game of the Year Award. The community get's too big. People start complaining about everything. Then the dev team tries to please the wrong community and loses focus.

This years World Series had the WORST TV rating in history. Baseball's fans are declining, even as an excellent rendition of their sport is being done on the PS3. Even if if was widely available, there still needs to be a fan base for it. Compared to the other sports, baseball is at a disadvantage

My SGOTY is 4.NBA2k13 3. NHL 13 2. MLB 12 The Show 1. FIFA 13. Each of these games has great graphics, most realistic gameplay ever, and good to great presentation. The major difference to me is customization capabilities and capturing the most of the sport. FIFA 13 has a great internet based creation centre, and iPhone app to manage your trading card ultimate team. FIFA is at least a year ahead of everyone else. NHL 13 has great gameplay, but MLB is closer to the actual game.
