College Football Seven Storylines from this Past Weekend Stuck
Posted on September 17, 2012 at 02:43 PM.

It seemed anticlimatic...but the former number two team in the nation the USC Trojans went down this weekend to an old foe that has had their number in Stanford. But that's not the only action of the weekend, here are seven things we've learned from Week Three:

1. The National Championship Runs Through the SEC - This is not a surprise, but for right now in Week 3, we know the National Championship contender shortlist. Alabama and LSU are the most likely teams of course, and Georgia and South Carolina will both have something to say as well. The rest of the league is full of good but not great teams, and it seems pretty clear everyone in the SEC will have to have two or more losses to avoid the title game this year. I'm not sure you can do that math just yet.

2. The Big 10 Has Fallen- The conference simply isn't any good. The best team in the entire conference is Ohio State, and they can't win the Championship (and Ohio State isn't National Championship quality). The Big Ten is easily the fourth best conference in the country minimum, but probably fifth.

3. Texas is A National Title Darkhorse-There won't be many teams go into Oxford this year and win 66-31. There won't be many teams score 60+ points on Ole Miss this year. David Ash was 19-23 for 326 years -- he's a competent QB. The defense did give up some big plays, but when you are up 38-10 in the third quarter, you are going to tend to lose your mental edge. Texas' defense was just fine the last two weeks. We are going to know a lot about Texas on October 14, as they have games at Oklahoma State, West Virginia, and against Oklahoma in Dallas coming up. The last of which could be a matchup of Top Five teams if Texas is still undefeated at that point.

4. USC was overrated and is already feeling depth issues, is Oregon a contender? I haven't been a believer in Oregon. But I'm beginning to Wonder if this year's version of the Ducks offensive attack is going to be able to propel them into National Title Contention? They're #3, and the offense is racking up nearly 600 yards of total offense a game. You read that right. The defense is pretty solid as well, but does tend to give up points. This week's showdown against Arizona will say a lot.

5. Notre Dame is wading through their schedule...thus far. But are they for real? The Irish are ranked 11th and are in danger of becoming relevant in College Football for the first time in nearly a decade. But their schedule gives them no breaks. Their next five games are against Michigan, Miami, Stanford, BYU, and at Oklahoma. All of those are at home minus the Oklahoma game -- but if Notre Dame is still undefeated through all of those games, they will be a top 3 team without question.

6. Florida State and Clemson are going to fight to make the ACC relevant again. The ACC hasn't been relevant on the National Stage in a long time. The last truly great team from the conference with real NC hopes may have been over a decade ago. But this year, it could be different. While the conference as a whole is quite paltry, with the only two ranked teams playing this weekend -- the winner of that matchup will have the inside track on a 12-0 season. Florida State will come into the game having the best defense in the country, giving up 1 point per game with 550 yards of Total Offense. The Seminoles win over Wake was incredibly impressive and if they beat the Tigers here, they have the inside track on a 12-0 season. Clemson on the other hand, has to play Virginia Tech and South Carolina still -- but could challenge for a 12-0 season with their offense but seem less likely of a contender.

7. After week three, the National Championship will feature....A combination of the Big 12 Champion, Oregon, Florida State, and the SEC champ. The darkhorses here is Notre Dame -- but I don't think the Irish can go much better than 10-2, even though that'd be a sign to me they're among the Nation's best.

@KCMizzou852 If ND loses to Michigan they're out of the NatChamp. Even if they go 11-1.
