NFL Offenses Are Getting More Powerful, Can the Defenses Catch Back Up?
Posted on July 6, 2012 at 11:38 AM.
This was a particularly great read from ESPN this morning. The topic is how NFL offenses are simply outpacing defenses right now and exploring how teams are trying to catch up defensively.
Here's an excerpt from the article:

I personally think the article is obviously onto something. Rules changes have made it tougher to defend NFL offenses effectively -- and the athletes are simply getting better on offense as well.
But the question to me isn't a schematic one but of whether the current direction of the game simply makes it inevitable that offenses are going to have undue advantages over the defense? Maybe that's what NFL execs want?
The suggestions thrown around by NFL Coaches tend to make sense in terms of finding ways to cover teams better with a more active pass rush, but will that be enough long term to keep offenses from going up and down the field? What if a team simply lacks that? Are we coming to the point where a elite pass rushing DE is paid just as much as an elite QB?
It's not like a 10-7 Super Bowl is going to rake in the ratings a 35-31 Super Bowl would after all.
But don't let me create a conspiracy. Let's instead discuss: Do you think the NFL's imbalance towards offenses is something that can be schematically solved or do you think the game is now structured to simply favor offenses?

when you spread the field out like a lot of teams are doing (packers and pats the best at it), you can't always stop the offense, only contain then and hope they make self inflicted mistakes. It will be interesting to see if anybody can come up with a spread-proof defense in the next decade.

With the rules the way they are, I think defenses are going to always be at a disadvantage.

I don't think I will ever see a defense like 2001 Ravens, what with 7 games without a TD scored against them. Probably will never happen again.

As any student of the game knows what is "hot" and "in" as far as offenses go tend to circulate in and out. Much like fashion. Defenses are going to start getting faster, more agile, carry more DB's amd cover guys. In return someone is going to get the bright idea to get 11 guys in the box and run straight at them.
This prediction is a little skewed with all the rule changes to the game. Which unfortunetly wont be getting better unless their is another hold out or comrade Gaddell steps down.
And yes, offense is what sells. It gets the fans in the seats and the fan base excited. It only gets worse when you have the idiots on ESPN declaring the year of the QB and polluting the young minds of America.

With the rule changes there is no way a defense to catch up. The NFL wants scoring and if defenses were to catch up, the rules would just be changed further in order to get scoring back up. I hate it, but its the new NFL. I love a good defensive battle but those are the days of the past.

I think the Giants have proved twice recently that elite level-pass rushing can negate any prolific offense - and they did it this year with a banged up, depleted secondary.

You would think after Brady, Brees, and Manning retire this would probably change. But after seeing what Cam Newton did, there's no telling what kid of numbers Luck and Robert Griffin will put up.
