The Updated Super Zany and Totally Crazy College Realignment Story Stuck
Posted on May 24, 2012 at 01:16 PM.

College conference realignment is the worst/best/most exciting/hair raising story to cover. Mainly because there is so much BS that is thrown out that trying to sort through it all seems an impossible task.

Lucky for all of you, I'm doing all of the work for you.

First, if you aren't caught up I suggest reading my earlier blog on this. Trust me, you should just to get an idea as to why it's happening again (or I can point you to thi$$$).

Ok for the almighty brevity's sake, here's the quick hitting list of what's going on:

  • Clemson's Board of Trustees is meeting on realignment issues today. Most likely you will hear they have given the President Authority to look for a new conference home or what have you.
  • Florida State has been in and out about it's interest publicly in the Big 12 -- which in realignment speak means it's actually quite interested and will be moving soon.
  • Chris Level (Texas Tech Insider) reported that TCU AD Chris Del Conte said that the Big XII had schools like Florida State, Clemson, and Miami interested in joining the conference.
  • Georgia Tech apparently has reached out to anyone and everyone who might hear them. But current word is they might be zero-ing in on the Big XII.
  • Everyone insists they've had no official contact with the Big XII. That's fine and dandy, since most of these rumors initially came out of Morgantown, WV it's safe to assume that they're talking to West Virginia as a go between -- who for another 40-ish days is still not a member of the Big XII. Sneaky ninja talk right there.
  • The word on the street in Blacksburg is that Virginia Tech is knocking on the SEC's door and begging for a spot in. The logical conclusion among many (and when is realignment ever logical?) that one of the North Carolina schools (NC State cough cough) would be joining VT to the SEC.
  • The rumor mill also suggests the Big Ten might make a play on someone, but the last thing I heard is that the polar ice caps were going to melt and that OJ was still guilty. I'm not sure what's true and what isn't anymore. But if the Big Ten went after someone they'd have to be academically awesome and bring boatloads of money to the conference. Think Rutgers, Virginia, or Maryland as three examples.
  • Of course, there's a lot of smoke/fire with Notre Dame joining the Big XII as well, as a partial member initially with an actual plan to integrate football by 2015-2017, when their NBC contract runs out.
  • Finally, I hear the Charlotte Bobcats are looking to petition for membership into the ACC as a partial member/basketball only school. The St. Louis Rams have also shown interest in joining the ACC as a football only school. This seems to make sense with all of the above also in mind.
When the smoke clears, I'm sure approximately 55.553% of what we heard during this period will end up being complete bs with another 44.44% being only half true.

You can do the math on what is actually going to end up true.

This whole thing is a bloody effing mess. Big12 goes from dead to rights last fall to "preferred landing spot" for ACC schools in less than a year. Wait, what? Then you have SDSU and Boise State in the Big East. That should make for a quick bus trip when they have to go play Uconn or BC.

Its getting to the point where I would think we have to seriously consider removing the tax exempt status from these athletic programs. They have moved from an academic program to a for-profit program pretty quick.

It is very likely that Virginia Tech isn't going anywhere without Virginia, and vice-versa, due to state politics. The top three public schools in Virginia(including the College of William and Mary) are all very tightly-knit, and one won't make a move independently of another without ensuring the other has all-but-assured proper recourse.
