It May Be MLB 2K's End, But 2K Sports Isn't Far Behind Stuck
Posted on May 22, 2012 at 09:00 PM.

In what was the least shocking news of the past year, the MLB 2K series is not returning for another edition next spring/winter (depending on your definition of what March is).

What may be shocking to you is that this is the beginning of the end for 2K Sports and that we'll be writing something similar to this about NBA 2K within the next few years.

It won't be because NBA 2K is suddenly going to get 'bad'. It's because from a business standpoint, Take Two has shown it has no interest in sports gaming if a franchise is not a huge profit machine.

While it's clear this is not a good thing for sports gamers, it is the inevitable endgame of the current sports game licensing process/cost and Take Two's desire to move away from licensed properties and towards original IPs.

The licensing costs on top of development costs of sports games really puts a hamper on profits for sports gaming's parent companies. Given the emergence of the digital platform as well, smaller original IPs tend to make the most money and whether you want to hear this or not -- game companies have to answer to shareholders and the dreaded quarterly report.

And yes, I know what you are thinking. NBA 2K does makes money right now, but that doesn't mean it always will. Take Two isn't enamored by their sports division and really the only thing that has kept 2K Sports from being canned or sold off has been NBA 2K's strength in the marketplace.

Did you read that? There's nothing in between 2K Sports dying other than NBA 2K.

That's it.

Of course, the question people might not consider is who would even buy 2K Sports if Take Two were to try to sell it. EA, Activision, THQ or Konami are the only suitable buyers of the franchise on the surface. Activision could, but has no desire to do sports or else they'd likely be doing them already. On the other side, THQ and Konami don't have the money to make a major in-road into the American Sports Market.

And EA kind of already has a sports division.

The licensing costs involved in even getting into the sports game market are astronomical compared to other properties. Thus, the risk of developing quality games in the face of competition is simply too high for companies without plenty of cash to incur. This means companies like THQ have to be very careful about the licensed properties they go after.

This is also why sports games have become more scarce over the past few years and why licenses have been bid out to a premium to gaming companies on an exclusive basis.

It's also why 2K Sports is now 2K Basketball and Tennis.

While no one (including me) wants to hear it, the writing is on the wall. 2K Sports won't be expanding into other sports from where they are through the rest of this console generation.

Football -- both pro and college are owned by EA on an exclusive basis. College basketball is owned by EA on an exclusive basis as well (sorry College Hoops 2K fans, it's never coming back). 2K just gave up baseball and 2K also gave up hockey just last year.

It seems when the going gets tough, Take Two gets going (away) and cancels a sports franchise.

And this year EA Sports is relaunching the NBA Live franchise with what will almost certainly be a strong effort to try to match what 2K Sports has done. EA will not match NBA 2K for years in terms of quality -- NBA 2K is a masterpiece of a game and I see no way for EA to match it in quality. But in terms of sales EA can certainly gain ground quickly because they can outspend 2K rather easily in marketing.

The end result will be a sad and familiar one. When NBA 2K loses it's market share and sales begin to slip and profitability wanes due to increased competition -- Take Two will do just as they've done the last five years, except this time it'll mean the closure of the brand.

The sad reality of 2012 is, the pie is only big enough for one company in any particular sport to pay for the licensing, developing, marketing, and release of a game. The company with the deepest pockets and biggest tolerance for failure will win every time in these market conditions.

And folks, that company isn't Take Two.

What a sad day that will be indeed.

The day when there is only one sports company EA Sports, will be the day I will no longer be a gamer! Hoping that will never come true.

Juat cause you guys feel the guy is bias, his logic is sound. if you only have one franchise and its the only thing keeping you afloat. Then it stands to reason when the competition (who by the way smells blood) puts out a new game and its at least decent...then 2k will lose money bottom lin. Thats a fact adn and if they lose enough then it will be the begining of the end for them. I hate to admit my self i love 2k bball games have since the original nba nfl 2k games on the dreamcast, but money drives and if they start losing money then this guys article is definatly gonna hppen

All I can say is in a lot of fans of EA Sports they can do no wrong and in the example of NBA Elite and the lack of innovation in the Madden series this generation we all know that is not true.

The above post is EXACTLY what is wrong with everything...

"Just play that game, its football, as long as they run, pass and score touchdowns and looks good thats all I care about"

Really? You come to Operation Sports.com and you have that type of opinion on the subject? People that come here are SERIOUS about Games and they aren't "just games" to them... You might not be as hardcore (clearly) as us, but if you don't at least understand people's frustration with EA then you need to read up a little... Point blank, they lie yearly about their product, they have bugs that have been around since PS2... No your going to say "don't buy it" and to that I say... WHAT CHOICE DO I HAVE???

That my friend is the Core of this entire issue... If people had a CHOICE, they wouldn't hate EA so much...

GET IT???

2K having the exclusive baseball license turned into a waste. Luckily, we had Sony and their 1st party license. I had high hopes for 2K after buying MLB 2K7, but it went quickly downhill and I became a The Show convert the following year. Fantastic baseball game. I loved MVP 05 for PC with all the mods, but gameplay doesn't compare to The Show, not even close.

Give me The Show with EA's HDR lighting and weather effects and that will do it for me.

I used to root and follow Viacom Media because I considered Clear Channel as having a Monopoly and was "The Evil Empire".
I feel the same way today about EA. However, much of what the article points to as the problem is'nt EA's fault. It's big money sports licensing properties. The same marketing that puts a $250 price tag on a $50 shirt just because it has a (Your sports team) logo, is the same brilliant, for those that can afford the luxury, strategy that eventually means that ONLY EA will probably be able to afford to play in a few short years. So, in the end, the Evil Empire always wins!

You guys are missing the major point. This article is not fact laced but opinion laced with the demise of a company that made a game so good that it ran the more established and well known game out of business. How many articles have you read on this site about NBA 2K running Live/Elite out of the business? Now how many articles have you read about 2K eventually meeting a demise? So, you are telling me that you can't see through why someone would rather speculated more than deal with reality? I can tell you why because that person likes the possibility of there speculation becoming true more than dealing with reality.

@cgalligan, I agree with your post! I'm a sports fan....a die-hard sports fans who wants the most for his money. Imagine going to a basketball game in which your favorite team plays for 2 quarters then sub in the mascot and janitor. You are going to be extremely upset.

As many have said, the day 2K goes away will more than likely be the day I stop purchasing games...... I've been playing 2k5 FOREVER and NBA 2K11, 12 will def. be in heavy rotation FOREVER.... I hope before they go out they MAKE A KILLER GENERIC FOOTBALL game and bow out gracefully

"I never have liked 2k Sports games. Even the last gen footballs.....I never feel like I have complete control of the actions of the man I'm controlling and it's the same in all their games, including NBA 2k hoops which I own (the latest version). Last gen 2k football controls alot like this gen Madden, which is clunky and unresponsive. The NBA game looks fantastic but pulling off moves is way more complex than it has to be and your men just sort of float around on offense with out the ball. "

Your probably too used to how "Madden" works and you feel like the "control" you have in Madden is how it should be in other games as well...

Example - This "control over your own player" that you talk about is simply wrong in Madden. The game gives you too much control, and by that I mean, it allows you to do things that simply defy and break the laws of logic and physics...
--example-- in Madden, you are given the ability to Defend a Pass (go for the int) and miss it, and yet your player is STILL able make the Tackle on the WR after he catches it because your DB magically spins (in mid air) and wraps up the receiver...

If "that" is your definition of "Control" then your 100% correct, when you say 2k has "less" control...

If moves are "too hard" for you to pull off in NBA 2k, hit up the practice floor... The moves are not supposed to be "easy" if they were, there would be no separation between a user that really knows and understands the game of basketball, and the 10 year old kid that just wants to fast break and dunk all day...

I'm honestly baffled at the fact that people can play Madden and 2k football and say that Madden plays a better game of Football... There are so many things that are so unrealistic and mind boggling that its not even close to me...

One example...
1. have you ever seen a DLineman push a Olineman into the pocket and sack the QB? or, is it always a 100% win or lose for the DLineman?
-A- its always a win or lose, there is no battle between the two. The OLineman either blocks him or he doesn't, there is no in between.

The fact that the license alone makes it not worth it to make games I am willing to go back to Madden 92 era with the "New Jersey" Green team with QB #7 etc... I loved sports games even before the real teams and logos were in the game. If someone would make a game similar to APF 2k8 with a dynasty mode I would play that and make my own league.
