Everyone has their bar for success, and we're going to talk it today. At what point would you (or did you) believe Madden will arrive/had arrived as a great game this generation?
For me, I think the moment will come when an in his prime Peyton Manning is a better overall QB than Cam Newton in the franchise -- which in simple terms means both the offensive problems have been fixed as well as the defense.
So what about you? What is your bar for success for Madden?

When the online franchise is as smooth and in depth as the NCAA online dynasty

I agree with the Online Franchise, but I would also add when, Superstar mode is as integrated as FIFA Virtual Pro. Team Up was okay last year but lacked the fun of having your own players that you worked to build.

When I can play a full 15 min quarter game (with accel clock in huddle) and the game and box score is sim.
NBA 2k12 is first sports game I have EVER played that has accomplished this. 12 min quarters (no accel setting or anything such) and it flows perfect and box score is spot on most of time. Sad thing is the freezing of games in 2k. BOTH my MLB and NBA freezing up this year. Quite a damper on 2 great games this year.

When the Online Franchise is at least on a NBA 2K/ NCAA level and we finally get a "Spectator" mode.

The day the gameplay is sewn up good enough and the presentation & franchise has improved enough to make me stop comparing it to NFL2k5

I really don't understand how people get so excited for Madden every year. With the NFL being such a huge sports league you'd think Madden would be more important to EA. I'm sorry but improving the grass quality, adding new announcers that sound horrible, making the intro to games more "realistic", adding new replay cameras and making sure the players are looking at the ball do NOT impress me! These little improvements should of been added years ago because IT'S PART OF THE REAL GAME!!! When you look at games like FIFA 12, NHL 12, NBA 2K12 and even NCAA Football 12, you wonder what happened in the Madden department! New team introductions! REALLY?!!??! If you actually sit there and watch EVERY intro before EVERY game then you have WAY too much time on your hands!!! Rather then concentrating on improving parts of the game people skip over, EA should be concentrating on improving details gamers truly care about.
Where is Jeremy Shockey's huge American Eagle tattoo, where is Adrian Peterson's and Arian Foster's running back mouth pieces and why is it that every time I create a player I have to chose from some default image look-alike face that looks nothing like myself or the person I'm trying to create?!?! Basically, what I'm trying to say is, where is all the features in Madden that I used to have when I was playing it on the ORIGINAL XBOX!!!???!!! What happened to tattoos and/or the ability to customize a face? Why is EA not implementing the features they work so hard for in other games into Madden and why is a college football game with #'s for the names better then the game that represents the NFL, the most popular sport in America?!
EA needs competition again and maybe they will wake up. I know some people enjoy a football simulation game with minor improvements every year, but I like my sports games to have some variety. Ultimate Team is garbage and I can't understand how some people enjoy having Jerry Rice 1 and Jerry Rice 2 as receivers while playing against an opponent who bought an All-Star team with MOMMY'S CREDIT CARD!!!! So what else am I left with? Playing online against an opponent with a horrible connection just so I finally get frustrated and quit, giving me a loss? Or should I play season after season in franchise mode winning the Super Bowl year after year and visiting Obama at the White House on his 10+ terms? No, I'm going to go play the AMAZING Superstar Mode so I can go to practice after practice praying I did good so EA can guesstimate the amount of points I earned! Oh, not to mention that I was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 1st round as a QB and what do you know, my 71 overall rating must of impressed the Packers coaches to START ME OVER AARON RODGERS!!!!!!!!
Maybe EA should bring in some fans with real ideas to work on Madden rather than bringing in former NFL athletes that can barely remember playing the game. Every year there are wishlists after wishlists yet EA chooses ONLY ONE stupid idea some kid came up with to “please the crowd”. Why? Because they can! So many people like myself LOVE the NFL and LOVE the game of football and unfortunately we are forced to buy the same game every year so we can play with the new rookies and the updated rosters. Everything I’ve seen so far for Madden 13 is minor or is something we've seen on last generation consoles. Unfortunately, we will all be back to playing franchise after franchise, online game after online game in hopes of some excitement. Thanks EA!
Oh and P.S. - Almost every player in the NFL has a visible tattoo and it looks dumb as hell when players run around with baby-like skin. Maybe EA should steal something else from 2K and incorporate real tattoos!

Madden "arrives" when the individual with a better knowledge and understanding of strategy, game planning, play calling, and player personnel evaluation can beat someone with better stick skills on a regular basis. Period.

The day that all resources are dumped into Gameplay and it is made as real as possible. That will be the day Madden or any football video game has "arrived". The gameplay is the most fundamental feature. It is the foundation. Make it amazing and then you can tweak it a little on a yearly basis while then having scores of employees to work on adding and improving various features outside of gameplay.

All I want are 3 things. Halftime highlights from other teams (NFL 2K5), end of the week highlights from other teams (both with commentary) and the feature where you fight for starting position in preseason like in previous gen games during franchise mode. that's it!! I would be content for a few years if it had those 3 things.....

When I play madden and I can see everything happening on screen could happen in real life. With that I mean I throw a pass and it all plays out not necessarily realisticly as in I saw it real life but in my mind I can say "I can see that happening and I understand what the wr was trying to do and the defender. I dont need perfection or even close to that just everybody doing somewhat of what they actually do. So many times I've struck out in the show and say damn thats Sabathia or 2K and kobe torches me and I say thats the black mamba. There is no (imo) seperation or differential of players as Steve alluded to. I dont need u to show or broadcast dpp just have them do it. Romo making bad 4th qtr decisions and Willis all over the field, Patriots tough to stop and Ravens and steelers harder to score on. all teams that are decent seem to feel all the same

When you can combine the front-office management features of Head Coach with the Madden game-play.
I'm strictly an offline franchise player, and unless the franchise mode is deep, I typically won't play it.

When players interact similar to how they do in real life. The biggest concer here is engaged player mobility. Engaged players must be able to flow towards plays to create realistic spacing on the field.
When footwork is more realistic.
When front 7 defenders have gap & contain assignments.
When defensive play calling is tiered.

When gameplay and presentation together can BOTH immerse me with the feeling that (in my mind) I'm not playing a game. Like The Show, NBA 2K, and FIFA.
Those games feel like they actually are LIVING inside my console.
