Chris Has a Madden Wishlist Too! (Part IV) Stuck
Posted on February 9, 2009 at 10:55 PM.
And you just thought I was done! I have covered presentation, line play and the passing game...however I have a few gripes about the running game. See if you agree!

  • The running game is static too. Why? I would say it has to do with the offensive line not blocking, the weird collision detection and the lack of animations of the little interactions between players. Right now, if you run into one of your own players you either run in place or bounce to the side. Instead, with a full head of steam going forward, hitting one of your own players should result in your back stumbling and falling down. Want to really make the speed burst a real risk reward? There you go.
  • Speaking of the turbo or speed burst...it still has a place, if used right. Some folks have a strong belief that speed bursting should be eliminated from sports games, IMO this shouldn't be the case. However, EA needs to make the speed burst something that has a real effect on fatigue and ability to manuever. There is a difference between running hard and running at your peak. I think the speed burst should be something gamers can use if you get in the open field, otherwise it should be something you shouldn't really rely on. So basically, speed burst should make your digital athlete really tired and easier to trip up. A small but novel adjustment.
  • Gamers will get mad, but the big run doesn't happen as often as it has in Madden. I'd say the best way to really improve the running game is to make every run interesting by improving the line play as well as the animations. The real problem with the Madden run game is a routine 3-4 yard run is just flipping boring. It's no fun at all. Where EA has to truly achieve greatness is to make the short runs exciting and the big runs less common but a whole lot more fulfilling.
Again, for the sake of brevity I'm cutting it off at three. But I know you guys have some complaints about the run game and I'm sure you'd like to expand on some of my thoughts. So let's hear it Madden fans, what can the team do to improve the running game?

I really liked your second point and I agree with that methodology of using speed burst.

Nice points. I play a lot of APF and one of the things I really like about that game is the OL-DL interaction. On run plays, you really have to read and set up your blocks to get a decent gain out of run play. The 3-4 yard runs in that game aren't boring as it felt like you really had to work hard for those tough yards.

This is all fact. I am baffled as to why the creators of the game do not sit down and brainstorm in this manner. ( I said baffled , good one)
