I'm going to have a review of iOOTP 2012 coming up next week. In the meantime, I've gotten some more playtime and here's the lowdown on the game from my vantage point.
First, the iOOTP 2012 is not close to its big brother Out of the Park Baseball in terms of depth and breadth of features. Let's just get that out of the way before we even dare continue on.
Second, iOOTP is a game which is made for people on the go, so accessibility is one of the many things the development team had to take into account while building this game. Also, given the platform is the iDevices -- this also means that the goal of the game is much different from Out of the Park Baseball on your desktop machines.
Third, if you like the roster management aspect of baseball you are going to find that iOOTP is the type of game that will suck you in on a long flight and it won't let you go all the way to when you land. It really is quite amazing how addictive the 'only one more turn' mentality can get with iOOTP 2012.
For instance, I have a career going with the Royals and I had them at a paltry 46-51 early in the season when Bruce Chen went down with a season ending injury. Granted, no team should ever cry about Bruce Chen going down, but he was having a pretty good season with an ERA at 2.21 and with a WHIP of 1.66.
I had a couple of guys down in the minors who would suffice if I wanted or I had about $1 million of room from my budget to possibly try to get someone. Considering the Royals are a small market team with limited prospects, I turned to the free agent market to try to find someone cheap.
Enter Rich Harden. Sure, he's not a great ballplayer anymore. But his ratings were ok, so my scouts said. And I needed a serviceable major league pitcher and Rich Harden was all I had.
So I picked him up for a measly $500K contract for the rest of the season.
Three weeks later, my Royals squad was 56-58 thanks to a hot offense. Rich Harden had pitched three games. His ERA was at 4.25, with a really bad game, a so-so outing and a really solid one.
Did I make the right call? I'm not sure yet -- but I certainly know he's all I have.
Suffice to say, for a $5 game -- this story is not a bad thing, not bad at all.
My review will be out next week but as you can guess, I'm pretty high on the game at this point. If you are an OOTP fan, I'd recommend you get this game ASAP.

I was able to continually attempt a pickoff by my pitcher until I (finally) got each and every runner on base out. Is this possible in the PC version?

I definitely share you enthusiasm with this year's game.. I've found it a significant improvement over the first iOOTP and I look forward to your review as I couldn't agree more with the comments you made about the game above.. It's all in the little things, both positives and negatives(I dig the example about losing your pitcher midway through)

Brand new to the OOTP series but have been waiting to try it out. It's the best $5 purchase I think I will ever buy. The game is perfect for someone who has a couple minutes here and there to manage a team. I'm not big on in-game managing just putting the team out there and see how they do. Decided to start a league using the Cubs so I give Theo the groundwork to build a sucessful team lol. Maybe I will manage the playoff games... if I ever get there.

Im a newbie to OOTP as well but I have to say that this is my favorite game on my iPhone. Tons of fun if you like managing a team. I roll with my Royals and we are sticking right around 500.. but Luke Hocheaver is struggling greatly at 1-7.

Nice to see people have fun with our game. If you have questions, just ask, I'm around all the time.
