Chris Has a Madden Wishlist Too! (Part II) Stuck
Posted on February 3, 2009 at 06:50 PM.
In case you missed my blog yesterday, I went over some very basic but very important areas of the presentation that EA needs to focus on to make their game more like Sundays. Today, I'm going to look at the area that EA has said they have fixed several times, but they still haven't come close, the trenches.

  • For some reason, we can't turn this thing. Want to know why an NFL game is so unique from play to play and why Madden is so boring to so many people? You can map out what the offensive linemen and defensive linemen are going to do. Madden is currently played in striaght lines, either the lane is open or you get sucked into a block. To make Madden really feel different, you have to take out the linear fashion of the game.
  • I wanted to block him, but the Madden engine told me not to. The plays need to be redesigned as well. All of them. They do alright, but in reality there is a lot more pulling, cutting, etc. going on in one NFL game than you will see the entire time you play Madden (and I'm talking all 121 games you'd play.)
  • Really, just release the guy who thought this was good. Madden's offensive line play is currently not close to what a real football game plays like. Think about it this way, would you play a baseball game if the pitchers could only pitch fastballs and changeups? That's how handicapped the play in the trenches is in Madden.
So what do you think? Am I being too harsh on the Madden line play? What do you think should be done to fix this area? Sound off!

Spin moves and swim moves should actually WORK. And speed rushers should have more of an impact. I'm not saying make getting sacks easy... but the DeMarcus Ware's and James Harrisons are just another defender out there.

It should be a huge difference with impact players on BOTH sides of the ball.

If I take out Kobe on NBA 2K, the Lakers become twice as tough to play well with.

Not too harsh. I agree. The only way to get sacks is with the left defensive end and blow by the tackle. Then you get 30 sacks a season. Line play needs fixed.

I think that the franchise online should be much like college 2009 because the franchise was great and throw in some features that make it more realistic and the franchise itself needs to be completely redone the super bowl celebration is wack they need to make it better than 2ks and the after game wins should b like nfl2k but between weeks they should have a commercial telling you whats the game of the week and how the nfl teams are doing with up to date stats and stuff like they did in one of the earlier maddens then the game play can be definetely better but if you pull all of those things some newer celebrations the fans to look more real much like the other new football games coming out all those things are needed. also the half time show needs to be redone and greatly done

Too harsh? Afraid not. If you look at it critically most of the fundamentals of football are missing. If you look at a play from start to finish, there is more wrong than right. 1st the ball is snapped. In real life this is tricky. Just look at the struggles of Warner in the playoffs, Grossman in general or the hundreds of rookie quarterbacks who played college from the shotgun. But Madden doesn't involve any skill. The exchange is always perfect. A Gears of War-style quick reload meter would add skill here but it hasn't happened yet.
Next the quarteback drops back. In real life its a 3,5 or 7 step drop based on the play called. In Madden 09 its replaced with the quarterback shuffling backwards.
At this point a pocket should have formed. In Madden the linemen create a straight wall.
Then the ball should be thrown to a spot before a receiver breaks into his route. In Madden you throw to the receivers current position and there is no need to consider the type of route being run because the wr will react anyway.
In other words no your not being too harsh. Pretty much everything on Madden on next gen from the beginning to the end of every play has been wrong. Hopefully this year they'll be fixed but past criticisms are definitely justified.
